Adolf Freiherr von Catty (born October 23, 1823 in Groß-Enzersdorf ; † May 9, 1897 in Vienna ) was an Austrian field military officer , commander of the 5th Army Corps and owner of Infantry Regiment No. 102 and a member of the manor of the Austrian Imperial Council .

biography

After graduating from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, Catty joined the army in 1842 as a sub-lieutenant, and in 1849 was a captain in the general quartermaster's staff . Appointed major in 1856 , he fought in the Sardinian War with Magenta and Solferino and, because of his bravery, was promoted to lieutenant colonel , the Knight's Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order , and the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class and, in the foundation year 1858, honored with the Commander-in-Chief of the Second Class of the Military and Civil Service Order Adolph von Nassau , then on March 13, 1862 raised to the status of baron.

As Colonel and Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army Corps in 1866, he was seriously wounded in the Battle of Königgrätz in an attack by the Roman-Banat regiment under his leadership against the forest between Lipa and Chlum , then with the Order of the Iron Crown, Class II, the Knight's Cross awarded the Leopold Order with war decoration and the Military Merit Cross with war decoration.

After Catty had advanced to major general on April 23, 1869 (rank from November 1, 1870) , he was ranked from October 25, 1875 Lieutenant Field Marshal . He was supposed to take over this post in 1876 after the death of the Chief of the General Staff of the Army Franz von John , whose deputy the Freiherr had been, but the designated general Archduke Albrecht wanted a "cold, more calculating and determined chief of the general staff" and appointed Anton Freiherr von Schönfeld to this one. Instead, he was given the post of commander of the 4th Infantry Troop Division at Brno .

The Lieutenant was a consequence of the Most High resolution Emperor Franz Joseph I on 18 October 1881 the military commander in Bratislava appointed. Catty was promoted to commander of the 5th Army Corps and owner of Infantry Regiment No. 102 in 1883, and finally to Feldzeugmeister on November 1, 1884 (rank of October 28, 1884) .

After his retirement on March 1, 1889, he was a member of the manor for life.

The Feldzeugmeister was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery.

In his honor, Franz Lehár composed the “Catty March”.
