Adolf von der Betten (also: Adolf Graf vonecken-Ringelheim ; full name Adolf Wilhelm Friedrich Graf von derillen ; * May 16, 1807 in London ; † August 7, 1886 in Reichenhall ) was a German majorate , legation councilor , chamber councilor and member of the Council of State from the nobility ceiling . He was also the secret envoy of the Hanoverian king .

Life

His parents were Johann Friedrich Graf von der Betten and Antoinette von Gruben . Adolphus married Louise von Wallmoden in 1835 , a daughter of Captain Thedel Carl Heinrich Christoph von Wallmoden and his wife Johanna Sophie Amalie Gottliebe von Pavel-Nammmingen. The couple had a son and two daughters:

  • Georg Friedrich Armand (October 5, 1836 - August 19, 1898), member of the German Reichstag ⚭ Marie Angelica Friederike zu Dohna (October 31, 1838 - July 11, 1899)
  • Julie Christine Jenny Leonie (born March 16, 1839)
  • Elise Burchardine Ottonie (* December 6, 1837 - November 9, 1885) ⚭ 1863 Baron August Adolph Wilhelm Walrab von Wangenheim (* August 2, 1831 - November 29, 1909), son of Adolf von Wangenheim

In 1847 or 1848 Adolphus began to lay out a large English landscape park for Ringelheim Castle . Adolphus had developed the plans while traveling in England. For the citizens of Ringelheim, the park work was a particular occupation in times of need. The obelisk on the island in the park was therefore later called the hunger column.

Hanover's striving for the Greater German solution

In 1862 a Greater German Association was founded in Hanover by Count Adolphus, Oskar Meding and others.

Secret diplomatic trip for the Kingdom of Hanover

In 1863, Count Adolphus was sent by King George V of Hanover on an extremely secret diplomatic mission to strengthen the middle states of Germany. Foreign Minister Graf Platen was not informed of the mission because he had little initiative for the Greater German solution with Austria .

As a first step towards the Greater German solution , the German unification with Austria, joint large military training camps of the armies of the four kingdoms and other German states (Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg, Hanover and the duchies) are proposed.

Count Adolphus' mission was a great success in Dresden with the King of Saxony . The next stop is Vienna . When Adolphus was in Vienna, Georg V appointed him by telegram to the Real Privy Council , so that he would have more weight as an envoy. Count Adolphus is received very graciously by Emperor Franz Joseph , but the striving to strengthen the middle states is not very popular.

In Munich is King of Bavaria little interest. Count Adolphus can get little support from the King of Württemberg in Stuttgart . In Darmstadt with the Grand Duke of Electoral Hesse , Count Adolphus was able to conclude a joint declaration.

Many hopes were dashed during the mission, but the basis for further plans was also gained.

Count Adolphus was interned in Minden Fortress in 1867 .
