Adolphe-André Porée

Adolphe-André Porée (also Chanoine Porée ; born March 14, 1848 in Bernay , † February 28, 1939 in Saint-Aubin-d'Écrosville , Département Eure ) was a French archaeologist and historian . He was director of the learned society Société des antiquaires de Normandie (" Antiquarian Society of Normandy"), corresponding member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and corresponding member of the French Ministry of Education (Officier de l'Instruction Publique) .

Life

Pore's family came from Beaumont-en-Auge ( Département Calvados ), his father ran a dye works in Bernay. Porée himself was very religious and became a priest at the age of 23 . In 1871 he became vicar at the collegiate monastery of Les Andelys . In 1875 he became pastor of Bournainville-Faverolles and remained in that position for 53 years. During the day he devoted himself to his community and at night he devoted himself to archaeological studies. He was particularly interested in churches in Eure that had been sold during the Premier Empire , important local figures, and the aftermath of the French Revolution . In addition, Porée was an archivist for the diocese . From 1890 to 1892 he traveled through France, Belgium , Germany , Switzerland and Italy for the purpose of archaeological research .

Services

In 1882 he discovered together with Abbé de La Balle and Gaston Le Breton in the old park of the castle Château de la Londe in Biéville-Beuville a lost statue of Pierre Puget (1622-1694), the statue originally stood in the castle of Le Vaudreuil and represents Heracles defeating the Hydra . The statue is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen .

The Histoire de l ' abbaye du Bec is considered to be Pore's most important work . In 1926 he received the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor (Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur) .

After his death, several streets were named after him, for example the Rue Chanoine Porée in Le Bec-Hellouin , Bournainville-Faverolles, Pont-Audemer and Bernay. In 1964 a stele was erected in his memory in the Bournainville cemetery, and in 2000 a room in the former pastorate (today's Mairie ) was set up as a Porée Museum.
