Ajdabiya (also Ajdabiya , Ajdabiya , Ajdabya or Egdabya , Arabic أجدابيا Adschdābiyā , DMG Aǧdābiyā , Italian Agedabia or Latin Agdav Villa ) is a city in Libya with 76,968 inhabitants (as of 2010). Ajdabiya is located in the municipality of al-Wahat and is the capital of the former municipality of the same name .

geography

Ajdabiya is located 18 km from the Mediterranean Sea in the historically significant region of Kyrenaika . At the same time, the city is about 170 km from the unofficial cultural-geographical border between the Mashrek and the Maghreb , which begins in Tripolitania . The Libyan desert extends around the city.

history

Ajdabiya is located on a traditional trade route and was called Corniclanum during Roman times . In 643 the Arabs under ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀs conquered the city and the Berber tribes living there had to pay tribute. From 914 the city became part of the Fatimid Empire . They called the city Ajibah at the beginning of the 10th century and after the expansion of the settlement Ajdabiya . From here the Fatimids carried out their campaigns of conquest against the Ichschididen in Egypt and in 969 took Cairo.

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, an important caravan route ran from Ajdabiya to the Kufra oases .

In the modus vivendi of Acroma on October 25, 1920, it was agreed between the colonial power Italy and the Sanussiya (Senussi Order) that Ajdabiya would be the seat of government of the emir Sidi Muhammad Idris al-Mahdi al-Senussi in Italian Cyrenaica . In 1922 the emir went into exile in the Kingdom of Egypt due to Italian attacks .

During the civil war in Libya in 2011 , the city was the scene of clashes between government and opposition forces on several occasions.

population

Around 70 percent of the residents of Ajdabiya belong to the Bedouin tribe of al-Magharba .

Infrastructure

Ajdabiya is an important transportation hub. Along the historical coastal road ( Via Balbia ), the coastal motorway running north leads to Benghazi , around 154 km away , while the coastal road leading to the southwest leads to the important oil port of Brega (Marsa al Burayqah / Port Brega), around 87 km away, and further towards El Agheila , Ras Lanuf and Sirte arrived. The desert road Tobruk-Ajdabija leads from Ajdabija to the northeast to Tobruk , 410 km away , and to the southeast inland, a road to the oases of Audschila and Jalu runs .

The historic port of Ajdabiya was on the Gulf of Sirte in al-Mahūr (Al Mahawr, Cas Turca ), 22 km away , which today only serves as a seaside resort. Today's important oil port is located in az-Zuwaitina (Suitina) to the north (Arabic: ميناء الزويتينة النفطي) and is a transshipment point for the Zueitina Oil Company (formerly Occidental Libya) founded in 1986 , as well as the Zuetina airfield , which is further south of az- Zuwaitina with two Runways.

It is planned to connect the city to the Sirt – Benghazi railway line .
