particularities Valley pass near Rauth ; historical Seetal

The Umgebung Valley , formerly also Seetal , is a valley in Upper Carinthia in Austria .

Geographical location

The valley stretches from the west bank of the Ossiacher See to the northwest to Radenthein , where it bends southwest to the east bank of the Millstätter See . In the west it is bordered by the Mirnock and in the east by the Wöllaner Nock and the Gerlitze .

The landscape of the region is shaped by the surrounding Nock Mountains and two bathing lakes. There is a local valley watershed between the two lakes . The Afritzer See drains to the southeast via the Afritzer Bach , which, together with the outflow of the Ossiacher See, the Seebach , flows into the Drau in Villach . The Brennsee , also called Feldsee , drains over the Feldbach , Kleinkirchheimer Bach and Riegerbach to the west into Millstätter See.

history

References to the settlement of the area valley can be found from around the year 1000, parts of the still wooded region were made accessible by clearing for cultivation and settlement by 1300 . The name area is documented for the year 1308.

From the 13th century onwards, the Counts of Ortenburg gradually acquired rulership rights between Millstätter and Ossiacher See, which resulted in a regional court comprising four offices. Over the centuries these passed from the Ortenburgers to the Widmann family and finally to the Porica princes. At the beginning of the 19th century, the valley was attached to the Villach judicial district. In 1850 the current local communities were constituted from the previous tax and cadastral communities.

Communities and infrastructure

There are five municipalities in the region. Starting from Ossiacher See these are meetings at Ossiacher See , Arriach , Afritz am See , Feld am See and Radenthein . The area valley is mainly used for tourism and agriculture. Small businesses and trade dominate. Only in Radenthein is there a stronger industrialization due to the magnesite mining .

In summer, the two lakes offer the opportunity for many water sports at mild water temperatures. The surrounding Nockberge are popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The thermal baths in Villach and Bad Kleinkirchheim are nearby. In winter the lakes offer excellent conditions for ice skating. The ski areas on the Verditz , on the Gerlitzen and in Bad Kleinkirchheim attract skiers.

traffic

Millstätter Straße (B 98) runs through the bottom of the valley .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the construction of a railway line through the Gegental ( Umgebung Valley Railway ) was considered, which, branching off the Rudolf Railway , should lead from the St. Ruprecht station (near Villach ) to Radenthein. The planned route was laid out in September 1908 . Since Millstatt also expressed interest in this development, it was decided to expand the project beyond Millstatt to the Tauern Railway near Pusarnitz . In September 1910 a commission inspection of the Radenthein – Pusarnitz section took place, which established the necessity of building a 500 m long tunnel. The prospective (additional) costs as well as the main use of the route for freight traffic, which is unacceptable for Millstatt, made the implementation of this route appear unrealistic. For Millstatt, therefore, the tourism-oriented project of an electric small train was created, which was supposed to establish a connection with the Spittal an der Drau, which is located on the main railway, at low cost . Construction was to begin in May 1914, but the start of construction was postponed due to disputes over the route. The First World War and the subsequent currency devaluation , as well as the onset of automobile traffic in the 1920s, ensured that none of the planned sections of the railway were built.

The public transport operated by the ÖBB-Postbus GmbH. Line 5150 runs from Villach via Treffen, Afritz and Feld am See to Radenthein, line 5152 runs from Villach via Treffen to Arriach. In Radenthein you can change to line 5140 via Millstatt to Spittal an der Drau and in the opposite direction to Bad Kleinkirchheim.

Lore

Say about the Mirnock giant

He lived at the Mirnock above the great lake. One day he stole the blond fisherman's daughter . Her father was able to free her with a sleeping potion from the forest woman. Full of anger, the giant hurled rock debris from the Mirnock group into the lake, so that it split and two new lakes were created: the Brennsee and the Afritzsee .

Kyselak's travels

The Viennese alpinist and court chamber clerk Josef Kyselak (1798–1831) also crossed the valley in 1825. He notices that there were many disabled people here.

“This district up to Lieseregg is the most unfortunate in terms of producing fexes (idiots or cretins); It is rare that one walks past a few houses without meeting these stepchildren of nature, who make hearts and eyes pity. "

- Josef Kyselak

He notes about the area around Feld am See and Radenthein:

“A valley basin with rising fields stretches all around to the height, on them wooden farmhouses float up to high mountains, and unsightly horned cattle and cattle climb in between from bush to bush. Radenthein is also located in a wide valley with steep mountain slopes. Many fruit trees, a rarity in the area, shade the houses everywhere. Here the winter must rage terribly with a lot of snow. Beginning in the desert, a moderate wind may already send avalanches down over the mountains, but a storm may cover houses and trees; the insulated mountain stream and the overcrowded lakes crossing their banks, then completely destroy what winds spared us the snow. The same applies to the villages of Dellach and Döbriach, which are sheltered in an even wilder area, on the rushing Radebache, which forms a beautiful waterfall to the right of the mountains into the Thalschlucht. "

- Josef Kyselak
