description

Agave gentryi grows solitary or with sparse runners with a diameter of 60 to 100 cm. The green to bluish, at the base broad, stiff, concave, pointed leaves are 60 to 100 cm long and 17 to 26 cm wide. The leaf margins are horny and serrated irregularly. The strong, dark brown to gray terminal mandrel is 4 to 6.5 cm long.

The panicley, elliptical inflorescence is 3 to 5 m high and is densely covered with fleshy bracts. The numerous yellow flowers are 60 to 70 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form up to the tip on the loosely and variably arranged branches. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 11 to 16 mm long.

The elongated, dark brown, three-chambered capsule fruits are 60 to 75 mm long and 20 to 25 mm wide. The black, shiny seeds are 7 to 8 mm long and 6 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave gentryi is widespread in Mexico in the states of Coahuila , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas , Durango , Tamaulipas, Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí , Hidalgo , México, and Puebla . It grows on limestone slopes, in woodland or in chaparral regions at an altitude of 1850 to 2800 m and is associated with Agave montana , Yucca carnerosana and numerous cactus and succulent species.

The first description by Bernd Ullrich was published in 1990.

Agave gentryi is a member of the Salmianae group and grows in the high altitudes of the Sierra Madre Oriental in eastern to southern Mexico in inhospitable areas with severe frosts in the winter months. The inflorescence, which is densely covered with bracts, is characteristic. Agave gentryi , (after Gentry, 1982 pp. 598-601 Agave macroculmis is a synonym of Agave atrovirens ) and is closely related to Agave montana , but differences in size, leaf and flower structure are recognizable. In the overlapping areas of Agave montana and Agave gentryi , intermediate forms are known.

Agave gentryi can withstand short periods of frost down to minus 15 ° C when it is dry.
