The Scales Mound Township is located in northwest Illinois on the border with Wisconsin . The border with Iowa , which is formed by the Mississippi , is about 20 km to the west.

The Scales Mound Township borders within Jo Daviess County in the east on the Apple River Township , in the southeast on the Thompson Township , in the south on the Guilford Township and in the west on the Council Hill Township . To the north is Lafayette County , Wisconsin.
