The Ahlbach is the less than one kilometer long lower course of a brook system in the Ostalbkreis in eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows from the left at the Rainauer Weiler Buch into the flood retention basin Buch , which there is the upper Jagst . Together with its longer left upper course Strütbach , the stream is 6.3 km long. However, its slightly shorter right upper reaches Längenbach contributes almost two thirds to its 13.7 km² catchment area .

geography

course

The Ahlbach arises in Buch from the union of the north-northeast of Neuler im Strüt at about 502  m above sea level. NHN emerging Strütbach with the about 492  m above sea level. NN on the edge of the forest island Baumgarten between Neuler and the Hüttlingen- Oberlengenfeld, which rises to the south-southeast of it, Längenbach. Both upper courses flow south-east for a long time and, in the case of the Längenbach, pass under the south of Buch, in the case of the Strütbach in Buch, the K 3320 (old route of the B 290 ) from Oberalfingen to Schwabsberg . In Buch, after a bend, the course of the Längenbach comes up to below 452  m above sea level. NN from the south on the Strütbach running eastwards here. The resulting Ahlbach runs about 0.5 km to the northeast, crosses under the Obere Jagstbahn and flows beyond the tracks at about 449.7  m above sea level. NHN straight into the slender western mouth of the Buch flood retention basin . There is hardly any gradient on this short stretch. Through its mouth, which is spanned by a bridge of the B 290, it flows about another 0.5 km to the current line of the Jagst. To the right of the bay, on the spur of the mouth, are the remains of the Buch fort , which has been made recognizable by planting .

Catchment area

The Ahlbach has a catchment area of 13.7 km². It is in the area where Jagst and Oberer Kocher come closest to each other on their respective upper reaches between Buch and Hüttlingen . The competing waters are in turn the Sizenbach running to the downward Jagst in the north, the Jagst with only insignificant other tributaries on the entire northeast side, the Mittelbach running to the Kocher in the south and Kocher and finally its deeper tributary Schlierbach on the southwest side.

The catchment area naturally belongs to the foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb , mostly to its sub-area of the Goldshöfer Terrassenplatten , in which the Ahlbach runs, the smaller north-western part to the sub-area of Platte von Neuler .

At the north-west corner is at 524.5  m above sea level. NHN highest point on a flat hilltop north-east of Neuler. From there, the terrain slopes moderately to the south-east, in line with the predominant direction of the upper reaches, which follow the geological stratification in the south-west German stratovaginal level .

The Neuler slab is a leveling in the Black Jurassic , adjoining it is the lowest layer of the Opalinus Clay Formation of the overlying Brown Jurassic , and in the far south-east there is also briefly its overlying iron sandstone formation . The Strütbach has dug its way down under the Jura to the higher Keuper layers. The Jura layers are overlaid on large areas of much younger islands Goldshöfer Sande , old Pleistocene river deposit layers from the time when Jagst and Kocher united in the opposite direction in this area and drained over the Urbrenz to the Danube . The terrain profile shows in several places, especially near the Goldshöfe train station , that the sands were mined earlier.

The area is in the Ostalbkreis , with the largest share of the area in the municipality of Rainau in the east, the municipality of Hüttlingen in the west and the municipality of Neuler in the north. Smaller shares belong to the municipality of Westhausen in the southeast and the city of Aalen in the south. The large Rainau hamlet of Buch is located on the Ahlbach itself , while elsewhere in the catchment area there are some much smaller towns. Overall, the population is low.

The stream is approx. 0.5 km long from the confluence of its upper courses to the lake shore, from there to the stream line of the Jagst in the Buch reservoir, 1.0 km, further along with the longer upper course Strütbach 6.3 km long. Its catchment area covers 13.7 km².

Nature and protected areas

There is forest in a large part of the area, especially in the south and in a broad north-south strip west of the largest town of Buch. From Bächweiher to where the Strütbach crosses these strips in his Wiesenaue to the edge of the book, which is 39 hectare conservation area Strutbachtal (sic) furnished. A natural monument on the edge of Goldshöfe is a pond near Goldshöfe (0.1 ha) with no surface drainage in the catchment area of the Eichwaldgraben, at the mouth of the Forstbach in the Längenbach the Burgstall near Buch .

history

The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes crosses the two large upper reaches from southwest to northeast; some of it can still be seen in the terrain.
