history

Air Pacific Boeing 747-200 in 2009

Fiji Airways was founded in 1947 by Harold Gatty as Katafanga Estates Limited . In September 1951, the scheduled domestic flight service began under the name Fiji Airways . In July 1971, the name was changed to Air Pacific after Fiji Air Services assigned the name to the company.

1974 began with the first international flights to Auckland, New Zealand. 1975 flights to Brisbane followed via Noumea in New Caledonia . In 1983 a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 flew to Honolulu for the first time .

In 1985, Qantas joined Air Pacific with a management stake and increased its stake to 46.05%. The government of Fiji still holds 51%, Air New Zealand 1.94% and the island states of Nauru , Kiribati , Samoa and Tonga a further 0.74% .

Air Pacific received its first Boeing 737-700 on September 22, 1998 and its first 737-800 on May 24, 1999. In April 2011, it canceled an order for eight Boeing 787-8s due to delivery delays. Instead, in October 2011 an order was placed for three Airbus A330-200s to modernize the long-haul fleet.

On June 27, 2013, Air Pacific was renamed Fiji Airways again. At the same time, a completely new corporate design was introduced. In September 2013, the German Stefan Pichler became Chairman of the Management Board and member of the Supervisory Board. Under his leadership, a five-year plan was drawn up in 2013 to bring Fiji back to profitability. The goal was met in 2015 with a dividend payment of 2.5 million Fiji dollars .

On November 22, 2016, Fiji Airways signed a letter of intent to purchase five Boeing 737 MAX 8s .
