Act Frond (original title: The Frond Files ) is the twelfth episode of the fourth season of the animated comedy series Bob's Burgers . It was written by Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux and directed by Jennifer Coyle. In this episode, Bob ( H. Jon Benjamin ) and Linda Belcher ( John Roberts ) visit the Wagstaff School exhibition Why I Like Wagstaff . Since they cannot find the essays of their children, they ask the tutor Phillip Frond ( David Herman ), who gives them the rejected essays to read.

The episode consists of three segments, one for each Belcher children's story: Louise's ( Kristen Schaal ) sci-fi story inspired by the Terminator trilogy, Genes ( Eugene Mirman ) musical that parodies rock 'n' roll high school , and Tina's ( Dan Mintz ) "erotic friends story" as an homage to The Night of the Living Dead . All three essays portray Mr. Frond as the antagonist .

As a guest speaker, comedian Aziz Ansari lends Darryl his voice in the first and third segment. The first broadcast took place in the USA on March 9, 2014 on the Fox Network , the German-language first broadcast was on November 1, 2015 on Comedy Central . The episode received positive reviews, with critics praising the humor and pop culture references. Loren Bouchard later referred to the episode as one of his favorites on the series.

action

prolog

Bob and Linda went to an exhibition at Wagstaff School called Why I Like Wagstaff , but couldn't find their children's essays. After trying in vain to hide from them, Mr. Frond takes the parents to his office and explains to them that their children's essays are not on display because he thinks they are offensive. In order to support his point of view, he lets them read the texts.

Why I like Wagstaff

Louise's story begins with the arrival of a robot from the future who looks like Mr. Frond and was built by the real Frond to eliminate Louise. On her escape, she is discovered by an older version of Darryl, who has also traveled back in time and explains to her that the robot was sent on this mission in retaliation because Louise was playing a prank on Mr. Frond on the day of the eighth grade graduation ceremony Will: She's going to put a brownie on his chair so it looks like he's pissed himself, causing him to feel so ashamed that he quits. Louise is happy about this, but complains that Darryl only brings an explanation and no weapons to stop the robot.

While the two are fleeing, they meet Gene and Tina. The four hide in the cafeteria kitchen, where Louise makes the robot jump into a container of cream corn, causing it to dissolve. However, they then discover that Mr. Frond has sent more robots. In the next scene, the Belcher siblings are sitting at a picnic table on a beach in Mexico - or Belize , as Gene says - where they hide from the robots and Louise writes in her diary.

Fart school for the gifted

Gene's essay describes the Wagstaff School as a "fart school for the gifted", where he and his classmates sing and dance to his songs about farts. Mr. Frond then confiscated his keyboard . With the help of his siblings he can lure Mr. Frond out of his office and free his keyboard from the "keyboard jail". He then plays a song about farts over the public address system, which ends with a fart that destroys the school.

A horror story

Tina's erotic “friends story” is about working as a hallway supervisor and talking to members of the basketball team who are about to receive tinea cruris vaccinations. Later she finds the nurse's room devastated and the basketball team has turned into zombies . Tina, Gene, Louise, Darryl, Jimmy Pesto Jr. (Benjamin) and Zeke (Bobby Tisdale) flee and try to get into the staff room, as it is the only room in the school that can be locked. However, Mr. Frond has locked himself in there and does not want to let her in because he has to survive to take care of the survivors. He is then bitten by the nurse who has become a zombie. Tina realizes that she can stop the zombies through erotic dancing. They think that she is flirting with them, whereupon they become Tina's friends.

epilogue

Bob and Linda think their children's stories are very creative. Mr. Frond says the real reason he doesn't have the three essays on display is because they portray him as a villain. They comfort him and give him advice on how to talk to children. He then decides to give a speech to the school inspector , but still does not want to display the children's essays. He gets up but doesn't realize he's been sitting on a brownie the entire time. Bob and Linda don't show, take Gene's confiscated keyboard and leave the office. At home, Louise gets a subconscious feeling that her prank worked.

production

The Frond Files were written by Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux and directed by Jennifer Coyle. In an interview with Rolling Stone , Loren Bouchard called this episode one of his favorites on the series and said, "Again, children's fantasy lives - being in their heads for so long is really funny for us," Bouchard revealed that the production of Genes Musical piece in the second segment was "such a fun treat" for the crew.

Comedian Aziz Ansari appears as a guest speaker and lends Darryl his voice again in the original version; the first segment features an older version of the character who traveled back in time to today's Wagstaff School. Ansari first mentioned his appearance on a "ask me anything" thread on Reddit . There he wrote that the episode was a "great idea" and that "anyone [who] is a fan of Terminator 2 would be VERY pleased". On March 7, 2014 published two previews on YouTube : a clip from fart-school for gifted children (Engl. Fart School for the Gifted ) in the Animation Domination channel and a behind-the-scenes animated video on the Bob's-Burgers Channel. On March 9th, the date it was first broadcast, an official poster for the episode was posted on the series' official writers blog , designed by Hector Reynoso and Anthony Aguinaldo. An extended music video of Gene's fart song was released on March 18, 2014.

Cultural allusions

Louise segment Why I like the Wagstaff (Engl. Why I Love Wagstaff ) is a science fiction story that is mainly based Trilogy Terminator on, and in particular Terminator 2 - Judgment Day 1991, including the arrival of the robot from the Future. A scene in which the main characters are hiding in the kitchen refers to a similar scene from the film Jurassic Park (1993). Gene's segment parodies the 1979 musical film Rock 'n' Roll High School and plays with the "adult versus child theme of 80s films". Tina segment A horror story (English. A Tale of Horror ) is a tribute to the zombie horror film Night of the Living Dead , therefore, (1968) and was in black and white drawn.

reception

"Frond Files" first aired in the US on March 9, 2014 on Fox Network as part of the Animation Domination program block. It was the first episode of the series after a two-month break, and the series received a new slot from this episode onwards , and it was broadcast at 7 p.m. It was seen by 2.21 million viewers and achieved a rate of 0.9 / 3 in the target group of 18 to 49 year olds. This made it the fourth most viewed program in the program that evening.

Av Club pilot Viruet rated the episode B + and wrote that it was “incredibly funny and reminded [them] why the Belchers are [their] current favorite family on TV.” However, she said the Episode “don't become a favorite as fast as it is with many Bob's Burgers episodes,” and she wasn't sure if she “got the format of the character sketch”: “A lot of it, as funny as it was, seemed like to be a retread of things that we already knew. ”Nevertheless, Viruet assessed the“ one-liners and little jokes ”positively and wrote:“ Every character - and every voice actor - was exactly right. ”

Robert Ham of Paste magazine rated the episode 8.9 out of 10 and called it "one of the best and funniest [episodes] of a long-standing great fourth season." Ham wrote, "The whole thing is a crazy and brilliant cultural allusion and some silliness at a time. It reiterates the strong connection the family has. ”Heave Media's Matt Brasil praised the references to Terminator and Jurassic Park in Louise's story, found Gene's segment“ isn't well received to lower your expectations, ”and described Tina's "Zombi love story" as "simply the funniest act ... freely told but good substance."
