Aladár Hornyánszky (Slovak: Horňanský) (born January 10, 1873 in Budapest , † October 27, 1939 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian - Slovak Hebrew , Protestant theologian , university teacher and translator .

Aladár Hornyánszky was born on January 10, 1873 in Budapest as the son of the printer's owner Victor György ( Georg ) Hornyánszky (1828–1882) and Francziska ( Fanny ) Skita. The family name was originally Horňák, but became Horňanský in the 18th century. Among his siblings were Victor and Ernő ( Ernst ), who continued to run their father’s company, and Gyula ( Julius ) (1869–1933), a classical philologist, historian and university professor.

After attending grammar school, which he graduated with honors in 1890, Hornyánszky first studied two semesters at the Calvinist theological school in Budapest, from 1891 to 1894 then at the ( Lutheran ) Evangelical Theological Academy in Pozsony, which at that time still belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary (today Bratislava ). Here his linguistic talent and preference for the Hebrew language were already evident . After successfully completing his theological degree, he decided to continue his linguistic studies and studied classical philology with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff and Semitic studies with Rudolf Smend and Julius Wellhausen in Göttingen from 1894–1896 , then Semitic studies with the orientalist Ignaz Goldziher at the university from 1896–1897 Budapest. He was ordained in September 1897 at the age of 24 and served as a chaplain and catechist in Budapest, but continued his studies in parallel.

In November 1899 Hornyánszky was appointed to the Evangelical Theological Academy in Bratislava for the subjects of Hebrew and Old Testament Studies , for which he was highly qualified due to his training. He taught there from 1900 to 1901, initially as a private lecturer, and from January 1, 1902 as a full professor. In 1917 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Göttingen . Until his death he taught in Bratislava, interrupted only by the First World War , in which he served as a military pastor from 1916 to 1918. In 1920 he moved to the chair for New Testament studies at the Evangelical Theological Faculty, and his student Ján Bakoš was the successor to the Old Testament chair .

Hornyánszky, who spoke and taught German and Hungarian and did not learn Slovak until he was around 60, mainly devoted himself to the translation and interpretation of books of the Old and New Testaments. He is the author of linguistic and theological works, including Hebrew textbooks in Hungarian and Slovak, as well as numerous articles in theological journals. He was unable to complete his last work, a Greek-Slovak dictionary on the New Testament.

Aladár Hornyánszky died on October 27, 1939 in Vienna, where he had been to be treated for cancer, and was buried there. He was married to Klára Szervánszky, with whom he had two sons: Aladár (* 1902) and István ( Stefan ) (1905–1974).
