Alan Robert Waddle (born June 9, 1954 in Wallsend ) is a former English football player . The tall striker began his career at Halifax Town and was part of the squad that won the European Cup for Liverpool FC in the 1976/77 season . However, he was unable to assert himself permanently in Liverpool and after a successful period at Swansea City in the late 1970s , he was active as a "wandering bird" in various clubs (especially in Wales). Former England international Chris Waddle is his cousin.
Athletic career
Waddle began his professional career in 1971 with the English third division side Halifax Town and scored four goals in 39 league games, with his winning goal against FC Walsall to 1-0 in the last game of the 1972/73 season was decisive in the successful battle for relegation. For a fee in the amount of 40,000 pounds it undertook in June 1973 finally Bill Shankly , who was with Liverpool , the English league had won.
In his second league appearance for the "Reds" he marked the decisive goal to 1-0 in the city derby against Everton on December 8, 1973, and thus briefly became a crowd favorite. However, it should remain the only goal in a total of 22 competitive games and after sporadic probation opportunities he completely lost his place in the team from mid-March 1975. In addition to their own goal doldrums, this was mainly due to the top-class storm duo with John Toshack and Kevin Keegan . In the last two years until mid-1977 he only played one game. In this he was substituted on the occasion of the semi-final second leg in the European Cup against FC Zurich . When Liverpool won the title in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach , he was on the bench. Only in the reserve team supervised by Roy Evans had he been able to regularly prove his scoring ability.
Alan Waddle, who is a cousin of the later England international Chris Waddle , then spent a few months at Leicester City before he was hired in May 1978 by his ex-teammate Toshack, who had meanwhile become a player -coach at Swansea City . The tall Waddle immediately brought his strengths to bear in the air and the Welsh club, which played in the English third division , also achieved promotion to the second division thanks to their new top scorer Waddle (19 goals). There he had to struggle with form weaknesses and in the ambitious team, which even managed to rise to the top English division in the 1980/81 season , Waddle had left the club in the direction of the third division AFC Newport County , which in December 1980 the club record replacement of Paid £ 80,000.
Although he scored a goal for him at his new club on the occasion of his debut, he was rarely able to prove the danger of scoring, and several short appearances at home and abroad followed. These included Gloucester City and Mansfield Town (both 1982), Happy Valley in Hong Kong (1982-83), Hartlepool United (1983), Peterborough United (1983-85) and again each Hartlepool United (1985) and Swansea City (1985-86 ). On his return to Swansea in March 1985, Waddle played without a permanent contract. However, he could not give the club, which was in "free fall" from the first to the fourth division between 1983 and 1986, the desired impetus. After relegation to fourth division , he returned to English professional football and was mostly in the Welsh league for clubs such as Barry Town , AFC Llanelli , Port Talbot Town , Maesteg Park and Bridgend Town . In 1986 there was a brief engagement at the Qatari club al-Wakrah SC .
After an active football career
After the end of his active football career, Waddle worked in the commercial area at his ex-club Swansea City, before he trained as a programmer at the Swansea Institute and reoriented himself professionally in the IT area. After working for the Siema Corporation on Merseyside , he emigrated to Australia . There he also trained the Demon Knights in amateur football .
