Albert Brenner (production designer)

Albert Brenner (born February 17, 1926 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is an American production designer and art director .

Life

Brenner studied at the New York School of Industrial Arts. After graduating, he worked as a display designer in New York and served in the United States Air Force during World War II . After the war he attended the Yale School of Drama and then taught at the University of Missouri in Kansas City . From the mid-1950s he worked as an art director for television. He had his first feature film participation in 1961 as assistant art director in the classic film Haie der Großstadt with Paul Newman and Edward G. Robinson in the leading roles. Three years later he was art director for Sidney Lumet's thriller Target Moscow . Other important films by Brenner's 1960s include the action films Point Blank and Bullitt .

Brenner received his first Oscar nomination in 1976 for his work as a production designer on the comedy film The Sunny Boys, starring Walter Matthau and George Burns . Two years later, the second Oscar nomination followed for the film drama At the Turning Point by Herbert Ross . He received another nomination the following year for the comedy The Crazy California Hotel . For the fourth Oscar in 1985, Brenner was nominated for the science fiction film 2010: The Year We Make Contact , the fifth nomination was in 1989 for girlfriends . However, Brenner never received the Oscar.

In addition to his film work, Brenner also works as a sculptor .
