Albert Ludwig Eilers ( December 21, 1830 in Koethen (Anhalt) - September 2, 1896 in Darmstadt ) was a German opera singer ( bass ) and composer .

life and work

Albert Eilers first studied theology and later law at the University of Leipzig . He was a member of the Academic Choral Society in Leipzig, which at that time included many students from the theological faculty. There he was a bass soloist, and his beautiful voice was discovered. He took singing lessons from the well-known Leipzig bassist and singing teacher Wilhelm Pögner and studied from 1852 at the Milan Conservatory.

In 1854 he was engaged to the Dresden Court Opera , where he made his debut as Oroveso in Norma . In 1855 he sang Marcel in Die Huguenots at the Hamburg City Theater , as well as Pietro in Die Mute von Portici and Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville . This was followed by engagements at the Stadttheater Bremen (1856–1858) and at the Deutsches Theater Prague (1858–1865), where he was particularly successful as Kaspar in Der Freischütz , as Lysiart in Euryanthe and as King Heinrich in Lohengrin . From 1865 to 1882 he was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Hoftheater Coburg .

In August 1876 he sang Fasolt in Das Rheingold at the first Bayreuth Festival at the invitation of Richard Wagner . From 1882 he was engaged at the court theater in Darmstadt . In 1882 he was a guest at the Her Majesty's Theater in London in the first complete performance of the Nibelungen Ring under the musical direction of Anton Seidl . From 1882–1883 ​​he went on a major European tour with Angelo Neumann's traveling Richard Wagner Theater .

Eilers was also active as a composer. During his engagement at the Deutsches Theater in Prague he composed the comic opera Die St. Johannisnacht , which was premiered in Coburg in 1867, based on a template by Heinrich Zschokke . He also wrote a one-act operetta , as well as overtures , masses , choral pieces and songs.

At Eilers' suggestion, the Society of Artists and Art Lovers “ Schlaraffia ” was founded in Prague in 1859 . His two sons Albert (1859-1939) and Franz (1861-1929) also became opera singers.
