Alexander Alexandrovich Baikov ( Russian Александр Александрович Байков * July 24 . Jul / 5. August  1870 greg. In Fatezh ; † 6. April 1946 in Moscow ) was a Russian Metallurg , chemist and university lecturer .

Life

After attending the Kursk boys' grammar school, Baikow studied at the physics and mathematics faculty of the University of St. Petersburg , graduating in 1893. He then worked scientifically with DP Konovalov until 1898. Even the first work was highly valued by DI Mendeleev . He worked for two years as a laboratory assistant at the Department of Chemistry . From 1895–1902 he also worked in the Transport Institute. In 1903 he became a professor at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute . 1911–1917 he lectured at the Lesgaft sports courses.

After the October Revolution , in the summer of 1918 in the Crimea, he took part in work on the route investigation in the Karadag mountain range on the Black Sea coast south of Koktebel (nature reserve since 1979). The Russian Civil War prevented his return to Petrograd , so he stayed in Simferopol until 1923 . There he headed the chemistry department of the Crimean University , whose rector he was 1921-1923. In 1923 Baikow returned to the chair of chemistry at the University of Petrograd and was elected professor. In June 1925 he became dean of the chemical faculty, but then rector of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in October (until 1928, his successor was PA Kobosew ).

1938 Baikov was the first head of the Department of Metallurgy of the currently in Moscow on the initiative IP Bardins founded the Institute of Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) . During the German-Soviet War , the institute in Sverdlovsk was evacuated from 1941 to 1943 .

Baikow was a corresponding member and then a real member of the AN-SSSR as well as a member of the Presidium and finally first Vice-President of the AN-SSSR. In 1937 Baikov was elected as a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from Leningrad and in 1946 by Bryansk -Beschiza.

Baikov was buried in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery. The Institute for Metallurgy has been named after him ever since. In 1975 a Leningrad street was named after him.
