Alexander James "Alex" Auld (born January 7, 1981 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was active in the National Hockey League for the Vancouver Canucks , Ottawa Senators , Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins , among others .
Career
Auld played during his junior years with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League . He was selected in the second round as 40th in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers . He stayed in North Bay and was traded from the Panthers to the Vancouver Canucks in 2001 . In 2001 he took part with the Canadian junior national team in the Junior World Championship , in which the team finished third.
From then on, he played for a few years for the Canucks farm team , the Manitoba Moose , in the American Hockey League . But before the NHL lockout 2004/05 , Auld was finally allowed to play for Vancouver when he stood in for the injured Dan Cloutier . The same was true for much of the 2005-06 season , which saw Cloutier undergo cruciate ligament surgery after injuring himself in a game against the Anaheim Ducks in February. From that game on until the end of the season, Alex Auld formed the backbone of the team. At the 2006 Ice Hockey World Championship he played for the Canadian team. For the 2006/07 season , Auld moved as part of an exchange deal together with Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan Allen from the Canucks to the Florida Panthers , who gave Roberto Luongo and Lukáš Krajíček , as well as a draft right to the Canucks.
Auld formed an equal goalkeeper duo with Ed Belfour at the start of the season , but after an injury he was only able to play 27 games and his contract was not renewed. He then moved to the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2007 , where he was first recommended for the NHL squad, but was sent to the San Antonio Rampage , the AHL farm team of the Coyotes, after Ilya Brysgalow was committed. In December 2007 he was finally transferred to the Boston Bruins . From 2008 to 2010 the Canadian played for the Ottawa Senators , Dallas Stars and New York Rangers before he was signed by the Canadiens de Montréal for the 2010/11 season .
On July 1, 2011, Auld signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators. For the 2012/13 season, the Canadian was signed by EC Red Bull Salzburg from the Austrian ice hockey league before ending his career in September 2013.
