Alexander Jakob von der Schulenburg (born March 2, 1710 at Altenhausen ; † October 23, 1775 at Gut Emden ) was a major general of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg , heir from Emden , Altenhausen and Hohenwarsleben with Ivenrode .

He was the eldest son of August von der Schulenburg (* May 23, 1672; † August 15, 1722) and his wife Katharina Elisabeth Schenk von Flechtingen (* November 25, 1678; † August 21, 1710).

Life

He chose military service and in 1725 joined the Druchsleben Infantry Regiment, which was based in Göttingen . In 1733 he became a lieutenant and in 1742 a captain. He took part in the Rhine campaign of 1735 against France as a volunteer, the regiment did not take part.

Later in 1743 he was with the army in the Netherlands and on the Main . On June 27, 1743 he fought in the battle of Dettingen where Georg II was in charge of the supreme command. The following year he was in Flanders . 1745 in the army with which Field Marshal Karl Josef Batthyány covered the coronation of Emperor Franz I in Frankfurt. In 1746 he took part in the Battle of Roucoux , on July 2, 1747 in the Battle of Lauffeldt ; there more than half of the regiment was killed or wounded. In 1748 he became major and after the peace he received his garrison in Lüneburg . The Venetian Field Marshal Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg was at a review that King George II held near Hanover and it was obvious that Alexander Jacob had met with him.

In 1756 he became a lieutenant colonel, his regiment was then in England . During the Seven Years' War he had multiple opportunities to develop his talent. He fought in the battles near Hastenbeck , Minden , Lutterberg , Korbach and Emsdorf . But he particularly distinguished himself on June 23, 1758 in the battle of Krefeld . The victorious outcome of the battle is particularly to be ascribed to his daring advance on an enemy battery. While still on the battlefield, he was made colonel. A few months later he became chief of an infantry regiment. After the peace he became major general, but was prompted by a statement by Field Marshal von Spörken to say goodbye and withdrew to his estates. Even before the Seven Years' War, the Republic of Venice made him the offer to serve as Major General in the service of the Republic with an annual salary of 6000 Reichstaler. The then major would probably have accepted the offer had it not been for the condition that he remained unmarried and sold his goods in Germany. He therefore turned down the proposal.

retirement

He and his stupid brother August Schönberg had inherited 2/3 von Altenhausen from his father. His brother's share fell to him through his death in 1772. He bought the third part of the Schäferhof estate in 1775 from Count Alexander Friedrich Georg and thus reunited Altenhausen, which has remained undivided ever since. After the death of the Venetian field marshal Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg, Emden fell to Jacob IV. After his death it fell to the sons of his brothers, from whom Alexander Jacob bought it and thereby united Emden with Altenhausen. Due to the unherited death of Alexander V, Hohenwarsleben and Ivenrode also fell to him. He died in Emden on October 23, 1775.
