Alfred Šramek

Alfred Šramek (born April 5, 1951 in Mistelbach , Lower Austria ; † June 23, 2016 ibid) was an Austrian opera singer with a bass and bass-baritone voice . From 1975 he was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera .

Life

Alfred Šramek was born in Mistelbach, his parents were employed in Loosdorf Castle , where his father worked as a coachman. At the age of six he moved to Vienna with his family . He received his first musical training at the age of ten as a member of the Mozart Choir Boys . At the request of his parents, he learned the trade of cloth merchant. He later studied singing at the Vienna Conservatory with Hilde Zadek and Peter Klein .

In 1974 he got his first engagement at the Stadttheater St. Pölten . In April 1974 he sang Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte in a performance of the conservatory in the Theater an der Wien . At the invitation of his teacher Hilde Zadek, members of the management of the Vienna State Opera were also present. Three days later he was invited by the opera to continue studying at the local studio. Subsequently, he sang for Hans Swarowsky , who not only accepted him into the opera studio, but also invited him to conduct a conducting course in Ossiach . At the age of 23 he was brought to the State Opera by the then director Rudolf Gamsjäger , where he made his debut as a master and band singer in Palestrina . From February 1, 1975 until his death he was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera.

From 1978 to 1985 he appeared at the Salzburg Festival , in 1982 he was a guest at the Bregenz Festival . In 1981 he took part in the world premiere of the opera Baal by Friedrich Cerha , in 2002 he sang in the role of the coffin maker and the devil in the world premiere of Cerha's opera Der Riese vom Steinfeld . One of his star roles was Bartolo in Rossini's Barber of Seville , in which he appeared 175 times. He also played the Benoit in La Bohème and the sacristan in Tosca over 100 times . In total, he designed around 100 games in over 2500 performances in the Haus am Ring. Šramek also performed at the Vienna Volksoper and gave recitals, where he told anecdotes from his life between Schubert songs, folk songs and Viennese songs. He had his last appearance at the Vienna State Opera on April 16, 2016 in the role of sacristan.

From 1982, Šramek lived again in the Weinviertel , in a winegrower's house in Lanzendorf . In his free time he was out and about in his homeland in his horse-drawn carriage or tractors. 2008 was when Sramek cancer diagnosed from a kidney failure resulted. Since then he has been dependent on dialysis . Alfred Šramek was widowed since 2012. The daughter Katharina Dorian is a musical performer and was seen as Rebecca in Tanz der Vampire . His second daughter Johanna died in 2015 at the age of 26.

The family burial site is in the Mistelbach city ​​cemetery (field C, number 57).
