Alfred Fiedler (folklorist)

Alfred Max Fiedler (born July 22, 1903 in Dresden ; † February 14, 1983 there ) was a German folklorist from Saxony .

Life

Alfred Fiedler was born in the Striesen district of Dresden . He attended after the elementary school, later the citizen school in his hometown. From 1917 he went to the Freiherrlich von Fletschersche teacher training college in Dresden-Neustadt , which he successfully completed in 1924. First he worked as a private tutor in Thürmsdorf , then he taught for three years at the village school in Struppen . During this time he learned to appreciate and love the nature and landscape of Saxon Switzerland .

He passed the electoral examination in autumn 1927. He then decided to take up a degree in history, German literature and philosophy at the University of Leipzig , which he began at Easter 1928. In 1933 he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post there. He received his doctorate with a dissertation on Wilhelm Traugott Krug .

Alfred Fiedler worked as a teacher until he was called up for military service in the German Wehrmacht. During this time he joined the NSDAP and began to do local and folklore studies in his free time. With Albert Zirkler , he recorded customs and traditions in the Dresden district, which resulted in an unpublished manuscript in 1937.

After the Second World War, Alfred Fiedler could no longer take up the teaching profession due to his previous party membership. He was now u. a. engaged in scientific research on home and costume studies before he got a position at the Institute for Folklore in Dresden in 1948. In 1953 he moved to the Institute for Folk Research founded by Paul Nedo in Leipzig , where he worked until 1962. He then returned to the Institute for Folklore in Dresden (later the Institute for Folklore and Cultural History), where he became a scientific head of work and mainly dealt with folk art, folk costumes and linguistic folk tradition.

Alfred Fiedler was a member of the committee for German house research at the German Academy of Sciences (later: Academy of Sciences of the GDR ) in Berlin . From 1963 he was responsible for the registration of monumental buildings in the countryside.

In 1983 Alfred Fiedler died in Dresden-Klotzsche .
