Alfred was the son of the royal government director Dr. Friedrich Meyer and his wife Therese, née von Coulon.

After graduating from the Wilhelm Gymnasium München studied ar from 1865 at the University of Munich Law , entered on March 15, 1868 as one-year volunteer in the Infantry Regiment body of the Bavarian army and was later released as a corporal of the reserve a year. On May 12, 1869, he was promoted to Landwehr officer aspirant and on July 18, 1870 to sub-lieutenant in the 2nd Landwehr Battalion. He took part in the entire Franco-German War with the Infantry Body Regiment . For his services during the battles against the Loire Army (October 1870) he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and with the Army Order of 3rd April 1871 the Knight's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of Military Merit.
