Alfred Soder
Alfred Soder (born July 19, 1880 in Basel ; † January 26, 1957 there ) was a late Romantic Swiss painter and etcher who was known for his ex-libris etchings.
Life
After 1900, Soder trained, among others, in Munich with Ludwig Herterich and Heinrich Zügel “in the field of graphics ”. In 1914 he received the Grand Prize for Applied Graphics at the Bugra in Leipzig . Richard Braungart referred to him in 1920 as a “dreamer, poet and fantasist” as well as a “lyricist, idyllic and romantic”. Until 1940 taught he lithography at the general Basel School ; where he was considered very strict. After that he devoted himself more to watercolor painting and created still lifes in oil and pastel .
style
Soder was influenced by Ludwig Richter and "with his angels and putti, animals and people in an idyllic landscape an outspoken late romantic". In 1970, Othmar Birkner praised him as the “ex-libris artist par excellence”, “whose multicolored etchings' are hardly surpassed in their refined technique”. And according to Jules Coulin , Soder's multicolored etchings “not infrequently” surpass the art nouveau artist Heinrich Vogeler's sheets of paper .
