Alfred Wahlberg (born February 13, 1834 in Stockholm , † October 4, 1906 in Tranås ) was a Swedish painter .

Life

Winter landscape with a bear hunt , joint work with Josef Wilhelm Wallander , 1861

According to Wahlberg, his father was a craft painter and his mother the daughter of an Italian sculptor. As a teenager he learned the profession of his father, but because he showed interest in music, he got piano - and clarinet lessons at the Municipal Academy of Music . In his first few years he was not very successful. He took care of himself poorly by participating in a chapel, gave piano lessons himself and drew at the Stockholm Art Academy, although he was never enrolled as a student. In 1856 he was able to sell a picture for the first time and in the following year he moved to Düsseldorf . There he was briefly a student with Hans Fredrik Gude , but mainly he painted independently. Further sales enabled him to travel to Holland and Belgium , after which he returned to Stockholm.

Wahlberg experienced his great boom when he settled in Paris in 1866 . In 1868 he was able to exhibit various paintings in the Paris Salon that testify to his transition from the Düsseldorf School to the French style. He acquired the technique of the French school without imitating their masters. At the world exhibition in 1878 he received a first class medal. He became a member of the Swedish Art Academy in 1866 and took up a position as a deputy professor without teaching duties in 1880. He spent almost every summer in different parts of Sweden, which gave him ample motives. In his last years he experimented with new forms of representation, but these were less popular.
