Alfred Dove

Alfred Wilhelm Dove (born April 4, 1844 in Berlin , † January 19, 1916 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German historian and publicist .

Life

Alfred Dove was a son of the physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove ; his brother was the canon lawyer Richard Wilhelm Dove . After attending the Joachimsthal High School , he began studying medicine and natural sciences at the University of Heidelberg in 1861 . The following year he moved to the University of Berlin and began studying history. After receiving his doctorate in 1866, he became a teacher at a Berlin high school. In 1870 he went to Leipzig and became editor of the magazine Die Grenzboten , later he also worked for Im neue Reich . His habilitation took place in Leipzig in 1873.

The following year Dove received an associate professorship in history at the University of Wroclaw , and in 1879 he was promoted to full professor. In 1884 he moved to the University of Bonn . He became editor of the Allgemeine Zeitung in 1891. He was accepted into the Bavarian Academy of Sciences three years later. In 1897 Dove accepted a call to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , where he taught until 1905. From 1901 to 1906 and from 1907 to 1912 he was chairman of the Baden Historical Commission . From 1909 he was an extraordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Dove had been married since 1872 and the marriage remained childless.

In a contribution entitled Ein Neujahrswort to the editor of the weekly "Im neue Reich" , which was printed in the Musikalisches Wochenblatt on January 17, 1873 , Friedrich Nietzsche addressed Alfred Dove and mentioned Paul Lindau , the doctor Puschmann and the Physicist Zöllner .
