Alpek is a Mexican chemical company that belongs to Grupo Alfa . The company produces raw materials and petrochemicals ( terephthalic acid (PTA), dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), monoethylene glycol , caprolactam (CPL), ammonium sulphate ) as well as polymers based on them ( PP , EPS , polyester ). Alpek is one of the largest manufacturers in the world for polyesters ( PET and polyester fibers ).
Alpek was founded in 1975 through the merger of Polioles and Nylon de Mexico . 1977 Fibras químicas (today Akra) and Petrocel were taken over. In 2011, Alpek purchased the PET and PTA businesses from Eastman Chemical . In 2014 the company acquired all of BASF's EPS business activities in Latin America. In return, BASF has taken over Alpek's PU business.
