The Alpkogel is 1414  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Semmering area . The Styrian - Lower Austrian border runs over the summit .

geography

The mountain rises three kilometers southeast of the Semmering Pass and a good 1½ kilometers south of the Sonnwendstein . It belongs to the ridge that stretches in the area east of the Semmering Pass southwards to the Fröschnitzsattel , and then on to the Wechsel and into the Fischbacher Alps . Coming over the Semmering, this ridge forms the state border of Lower Austria to Styria , and also the watershed Mürz (via Dürrgraben and Fröschnitzbach ) to Leitha , to the Alpkogel to Schwarza (via Göstritzgraben and Auebach ), from there to Pitten (via Ottenbach and Trattenbach and further on ). In the Schwarza catchment area it forms the southern tip, in which the Mürz is the easternmost point. Politically, the Alpkogel belongs to Spital am Semmering and Trattenbach , the municipal boundary to Schottwien runs north just below the summit to the ridge line.

Paths and huts

The mountain is mostly climbed as part of the high-altitude long-distance hiking trails in the area: the Lower Austrian state circular hiking trail  (  NLW) via Semmering - Sonnwendstein to the Fröschnitzsattel, the Gloggnitz circular hiking trail (834) in several variants or the Styrian Pre-Alpine Trail  (740) on the ridge. Approaches are also possible from Göstritz ( Weinweg , further on the ridge), from Trattenbach via Schlaggraben or Ottenbach as well as Steinhaus via the Dürrgraben. Due to the numerous forest paths, the mountain can also be easily reached by mountain bikes. The long-distance paths lead around the summit on both sides, and some easy climbs lead to the wooded summit itself. The summit corridor is partly open. In winter, the Wechsel-Semmering panorama trail is laid here. The mountain is also known as a ski tour with crossings and an attractive destination for snowshoeers.

Alpkogel hut

South of the summit is the Alpkogel hut  ( 1314  m above sea level ), a small self-catering shelter of the Austrian Tourist  Club (ÖTK), Neunkirchen section .
