Altamiro Rossato CSsR (born June 23, 1925 in Tuparendi , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil , † May 13, 2014 in Porto Alegre , Rio Grande do Sul) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Porto Alegre .

Life

Altamiro Rossato who entered religious community of Redemptorists in and took off in 1947 professed. After studying philosophy and theology he received in the December 27, 1951 São Paulo , the ordination . He studied patristic and Catholic theology at the Roman Pontifical Lateran University , where he also in spirituality to Dr. theol. received his doctorate . He taught at various institutes and after his return to Brazil was active in pastoral care and as a missionary. For his order he was a councilor and provincial of the Southeast Province.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Marabá on December 8, 1985 . He received his episcopal ordination on March 2nd of the same year by the Bishop of Santo Ângelo , Estanislau Amadeu Kreutz ; Co- consecrators were Alano Maria Pena OP , Bishop of Itapeva , and Patrício José Hanrahan CSsR, Prelate of Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia .

On March 15, 1989, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Porto Alegre. When João Cláudio Collings retired on July 17, 1991, he succeeded him in the office of Archbishop of Porto Alegre.

On February 7, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. In 2001 he was made an honorary citizen of Porto Allegre.
