Until the 15th century, the village was owned by the burgraves of Kirchberg (see Wasserburg Lehesten ) and the lords of Lobdeburg . In 1507 Altengönna was sold to the Teutonic Order and was part of the Kommende Lehesten until 1809 .

The family name de Ginna or von der Gönna / von der Gönne was first mentioned at the end of the 13th century and is still widely used today. With the establishment of a second village Gönna ( Neuengönna ) at the beginning of the 15th century, the name Altengönna became common .

The parish of Altengönna has also supplied the Krippendorf and Lehesten branches from the very beginning. In 1998 Closewitz, Cospeda, Lützeroda and Vierzehnheiligen were added to the parish.

The current village church of Altengönna was built in 1690. It houses a late Gothic winged altar made around 1510 with a main shrine and predella.
