Dörte Hansen (today Dörte Hansen-Jaax; * 1964 in Husum ) is a German linguist, journalist and writer .

Life

Dörte Hansen grew up in Högel in what is now the Amt of Central North Friesland , and Low German was spoken at home . She learned her “first foreign language”, High German, in elementary school.

After graduating from high school in 1984, she studied sociolinguistics , English , Romance studies and Frisian studies at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1994 Hansen received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg with a sociolinguistic thesis on a special form of bilingualism .

Dörte Hansen is married to the documentary film director Sven Jaax and has a daughter. From 2005 she lived with her family in Steinkirchen (Altes Land) and since 2016 again in Husum.

Act

After an internship at Merian magazine , she worked as a journalist for several radio stations ( NDR , WDR , SWR , hr , DLF ) and various magazines until 2008 , and then as a permanent culture editor at NDR Info until 2012 . Since then she has been working as a freelance writer.

In her first novel Altes Land (2015) Dörte Hansen dealt critically with the topic of home : Many city dwellers discovered the country as a place of longing for home and moved to the village. In their opinion, however, they are mistaken because they only play country life and do “peasant theater”. She links this topic with the fate of the female main character as a homeless post-war refugee from East Prussia in the Altes Land . The book became a bestseller and received critical acclaim.

The second novel Mittagsstunde (2018) also received a lot of critical praise and explores German village life. It describes the cultural and interpersonal change in the fictional North Frisian street village “Brinkebüll” from the 1960s to the present day. The author manages without idyllic country life and draws the often “bizarre characters with a lot of empathy” in laconic language.
