Alvito is a city ( Vila ) in Portugal with 1278 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The district of Alvito is located in the northwest of the Baixo Alentejo 38 km from Beja (district capital) with a total area of 265 km² and 2523 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). In addition to the municipality of Alvito, there is also the municipality of Vila Nova da Baronia , which also belongs to this district.
Alvito is known beyond the borders of the Alentejo for its male choirs, which perform typical Alentejan chants without instrumental accompaniment, called Cante alentejano (part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage since 2014 ).
History and sights
Alvito received town charter in 1280 . The most important monument in the place is the castle, which was built in 1481 by the first baron of Alvito, the building is located next to the Praça da Republica square . The main church Nossa Senhora da Assunção was built as early as the 13th century, and redesigned between 1480 and 1554. Inside there are frescoes of great beauty. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful churches in the Alentejo, in which different styles can be found (Gothic, Baroque, Manueline ). Also noteworthy is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Candeias church. This church was also built in the 13th century and in the 16th century it became the seat of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia order of Alvito. Inside the church there are rare tile paintings ( azulejos ) from the 17th century and a gilded altar.
