action

The film begins with a rape , but neither the perpetrator nor the victim nor the time of the crime can be identified. 18-year-old Ben has just graduated with honors and his 34-year-old mother Sylvia Taudes is very proud of him. She herself has a new admirer in Wolfgang. Ben takes a summer job where he meets Hanna, with whom he starts a relationship. Ben is also well received in Hanna's family. When Ben juggles with his mother, she reacts in panic to his grip. A scar on her hand indicates a previous injury.

Sylvia receives the surprising news in the mail that her father Johann Taudes has died, she throws the party in the trash. Ben believes, however, that his grandfather died a long time ago, he had never met his father, Sylvia had raised Ben alone. She had told her son that he was a child of free love and the result of a one-night stand by a chance InterRail acquaintance in Florence . While cleaning up, Ben accidentally finds the party slip and confronts his mother. Sylvia wanted to cut off Ben's contact with his grandfather, partly because her father wanted to force her to have an abortion . Ben drives to the cemetery where his grandfather is to be buried, he arrives too late for the funeral, at the funeral in the inn he meets some relatives and Sylvia's school friend Gerti. He learns from her that his mother may never have been to Florence. Sylvia and Gerti last met at a trial in Vienna , and she doesn't want to tell him what the trial was about. So Ben confronts his mother again: she confesses to him that he is not a child of pure love, but was conceived by a rape.

Ben decides to go in search of his father. From Gerti he learns his name: Alfred Mühlberger. Back then he was a guest at the Hotel Mariandl in Spitz , where Gerti and Sylvia had a holiday job. According to a newspaper report from that period, he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for rape, including one year on probation . Ben finally visits his father in his farm, but without first revealing his identity. He only leaves the newspaper report about the rape and Mühlberger's conviction. After Ben Mühlberger identified himself, he briefly beats his father, runs away and returns to his mother with the words “I don't need a father”.

reception

When the film was first broadcast on Das Erste, 4.63 million viewers followed, corresponding to a market share of 14.5 percent.

Thomas Gehringer from tittelbach.tv found that the film would tell “unspectacular and multi-layered about the consequences of a crime and growing up” and gave the verdict “Good cast (Thomas Schubert, Koschitz) in a harmonious mixture of seriousness, emotional and easy moments. [...] Even if this renewed collaboration between Grimme Prize winner Leytner and the author Agnes Pluch may not achieve the quality of the Alzheimer's and love drama The Extinction , the unspectacular film seems well thought out and well balanced with its mixture of easy and serious moments Dialogue, cleverly used music and emotional scenes. "

In 2015, the film was nominated for the main prize and the Austrian Adult Education TV Prize at the Baden-Baden TV Film Festival , and Hermann Dunzendorfer was nominated in the category Best Cinematography for TV Film at the 2016 Romy Awards.
