action

The pensioner Albert Miklei moved to Kienitz an der Oder in 1927 to get married and work as a ferryman. He met his wife when he was working as a roofer in a Kienitz hotel and was always watching her in the yard. He had to give up the profession of ferryman because after the Second World War the other side of the Oder no longer belonged to Germany . The couple can still clearly remember the first soldiers of the Red Army who left them alone and just wanted to go to Berlin quickly . But the German Air Force wants to prevent the opposing bridgehead from being expanded and is reacting with attacks on the Oder crossing and the surrounding area. In addition to many German civilians, German soldiers and over 30,000 Soviet soldiers will also lose their lives here within the next three months . Albert Miklei and his 16-year-old son were taken prisoner by the Soviets.

The former farmer Fritz Hans talks about his hobby, collecting leaves from various plants. He's also got it into his head to plant trees in every possible place in the area. In January 1946 Fritz came to Neulietzegöricke from his former place of residence in Bärwalde on the side that now belongs to Poland . His former house was demolished for the reconstruction of Warsaw , here in the Oderbruch he is getting a piece of land as a result of the land reform in Germany , but has to relearn, because the soils require a different management than the one he was previously familiar with. After several visits to his old homeland, he comes to the conclusion that he doesn't want to go back.

The tractor driver from LPG Groß Neuendorf, Ottmar Krause, says that, unlike many other young people, he likes to live in the village . He spent his army time in a city and cannot take pleasure in it. Ottmar lives between the large fields in the extension of the village with his brother with his grandmother Hildegard Baumann, who co-founded the LPG in 1953. The brother is an electronics technician in Frankfurt (Oder) and only comes home on weekends. The two brothers moved in with grandma because their mother died and the divorced father wanted to put them in a home.

A part of the Goldpunkt shoe factory is located in the former machine-tractor station (MTS) Kienitz . A large proportion of the predominantly young women have already completed their professional qualifications here. It's the only farm in the area where you can work if you don't want to go into agriculture. It looks very bad with the options for spending free time, because apart from dancing, swimming, sledding and cuddling with friends, there isn't much to do.

Production and publication

On the river , the artistic working group (KAG) filmed document under the working title Landscapes 3 on ORWO-Color and had its world premiere on July 13, 1979.

The dramaturgy was in the hands of Wolfgang Geier .

criticism

In New Germany Henryk Goldberg wrote in his contribution to the 2nd National Festival of Documentary and Short Films of the GDR in Neubrandenburg :

“Koepp was looking for“ history and stories on the Oder ”. With this intention, the conception of the content of his work was evidently too broad. With all the interesting snapshots that reflect aspects of our reality, the film got out of hand and became blurred. In addition, there were obvious interventions by the director, who sometimes literally staged the interviewees. "
