Americus is a city and also the county seat of Sumter County in the US state of Georgia with 17,041 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Americus is located approximately 200 km south of Atlanta .
history
Americus was founded in 1832. During the Civil War there were three hospitals for Confederate soldiers. Much of the current building stock in the city center dates from the 1880s. Americus was the first Georgia city to run an electric tram. It was the eighth largest city in the state for a while, but then fell behind compared to other cities.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 17,041 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 6,481 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.48 people per household. There are a total of 7135 households.
62.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.14 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 35.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 22.7% of all households.
32.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 30.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 29 years. 44.5% of the population were male and 55.5% were female.
30.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 63.5% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 1.8% as Asian Americans . 2.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 24,882 USD , while 42.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.
