meaning

The protected area is one of the few remaining dry sand turf in the Rhine-Main area that was formed in the last Ice Age and has been preserved to this day through many years of human grazing. Accordingly, there are rare animal and plant species that have adapted to the special conditions, such as the silver grass or the dune tiger beetle . The area is still grazed by a shepherd to prevent forest formation.

The 16.33  hectare area with the identification number 1435077 has been designated as a nature reserve since 1995. Investors had previously tried to buy up the entire area and erect commercial buildings there in order to create a "fait accompli" before it was designated as a nature reserve and then to make a profit by speculating on building land. As a result, the Darmstadt regional council, as the higher nature conservation authority , issued a resolution on April 6, 1992 to temporarily secure the area.
