The Ohlsteinbruch near Steinau an der Straße is a nature reserve in the area of the town of Steinau an der Straße in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse . The area includes the abandoned basalt - quarry "Ohl" as well as forest and juniper heaths. The valuable vegetation of the landscape-defining juniper heaths with species-rich nebulized grass lawns and lean hay meadows justify the nature reserve's worthy of protection. The near-natural area of the old quarry is characterized by a great variety of locations and valuable habitats for amphibians , reptiles , birds and invertebrates have developed.

location

Geographical location

The nature reserve is located northeast of the core town of Steinau an der Straße directly on the A 66 to the west and east of the L 3179 state road . The reserve is located at an altitude of 250 to 359 meters.

Natural allocation

It is located in the natural upper unit Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön (D55) and belongs to the natural area Sandstone-Spessart . The nature reserve is located in the natural subunit Schlüchtern basin (141.6). The wooded and grassland-dominated cultural landscape is a landscape worthy of protection in Germany.

geology

The nature reserve is located in a Cenozoic mountain range with layers from the Vogelsberg volcanic area and in a Mesozoic mountain range with layers from the Schlüchtern basin . The formative rocks are: alkali olivine basalts , tuffs , solifluction - rubble from basaltic rocks with clay and lime - dolomite stone . The basalt effluent rock was mined in the former quarry. The basalt was created as a solidification product at the beginning of the last ice age when huge lava masses from the volcanic area Vogelsberg reached the surface of the earth.

meaning

The 25.43 hectare area with the identifier 1435034 has been designated as a nature reserve since 1984. In addition, the protected area is congruent with the flora-fauna-habitat area "Ohlsteinbruch bei Steinau an der Straße". The area is therefore part of the European Natura 2000 network . The FFH area was placed under protection by the state's ordinance on the Natura 2000 areas in Hesse in 2008.

Flora and fauna

flora

The nature reserve has the protected habitat types : Borstgrasrasen (0.36 hectares), juniper heaths (Juniperus communis formations, 1.21 hectares), silicate rocks with their crevice vegetation (0.50 hectares) and woodruff beech forest (Asperulo-Fagetum, 3.10 hectares). Beech forests take up around a fifth of the area (19 percent). Deciduous forests that are heavily influenced by forestry have roughly the same area share with 21 percent. Coniferous forests are only found in small areas with 11 percent. Mixed forests grow thick on 18 percent of the area. On just 8 percent of the area, grass turf and grassland are predominant. Around 7 percent of the area is made up of grassland locations. In this respect, the ecologically valuable open land societies only take up 15 percent of the area. The lime- and warmth -loving orchid orchid ( Neotinea ustulata ), a highly endangered species of orchid, occurs in the species-rich hay meadows .

fauna

Due to the low nutrient supply, the density of grasshoppers , butterflies and phytophagous insect groups is increased. The occurrence of the speckled poplar moth (Stegania cararia), a rare and heat-loving butterfly species, was first recorded by Reiner Zell in the nature reserve in Hesse in 2000. The existing structural wealth and the numerous transitions between open land and forest ( ecotones ) offer good conditions for the bird world ( avifauna ). Red- backed kite ( Lanius collurio ) and red kite ( Milvus milvus ) were detected in the protected area in 1992. The yellow-bellied toad ( Bombina variegata ) was found in the area in previous years. However, the rare amphibian species could not be confirmed in an investigation in 2003.

Usage history

Basalt was mined in the former quarry between 1880 and 1930. Then the abandoned quarry was partially afforested with spruce and maple trees and left to succession . The open land was created on the one hand on the former pastures for sheep (juniper heaths) and on the other hand on moist litter meadow locations. The litter meadows were traditionally mowed once a year, in September, and the mowing material was used as litter for the stables. The designation as a nature reserve took place in 1984. Since then, maintenance measures and sheep grazing have been carried out to keep the valuable grassland sites open. Non-local trees such as spruce and black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia ) were also removed.
