The Wiesbüttmoor is a spring moor near Flörsbachtal in the Main-Kinzig district in the Hessian Spessart .

geography

The Wiesbüttmoor is located in the nature reserve of the same name on the border between the places Wiesen in Bavaria and Flörsbach in Hesse . It lies at 436 meters and is therefore the highest intermediate moor area in the Spessart. The summit of the Hengstberg (515 m) extends in the northeast, that of the Hirschberg (535 m) in the southeast near Mosborn and that of the Erkelshöhe (517 m) in the south . The Wiesbüttmoor is about 2 km long and about 50 m wide and its peat layer is up to 2 m deep. The Wiesbüttsee is located northwest of the moor . The Spessart-Höhenstraße (L 2905) runs about 100 m away and to the north of it the Birkenhainer Straße and the Eselsweg .

history

Around 2000 years ago there was a swampy, temporarily dammed forest, a so-called quarry forest . Numerous small springs fed the area with water and formed the upper reaches of the Aubach . In the late Middle Ages , the surrounding forest was cleared and its function as a natural water reservoir was lost. The abundant rainfall gathered in the valley floor, and the upper reaches of the Aubache gradually became marshy.

For mining in neighboring Lochborn near Bieber , the Wiesbüttsee was dammed in 1765 according to plans by the miner Johann Philipp Cancrinus . The water was thus retained in the hollow above. The swampy hollow with its stagnant, nutrient-poor and acidic water could now be colonized by peat moss . An intermediate moor was created. In contrast to the swamp moor , the constantly growing peat layers on the intermediate moor have become so thick that the influence of the mineral-rich groundwater subsides. In 1953 the moor was declared a nature reserve in order to preserve its vegetation , which is unique in the Spessart .

Flora and fauna

In the Wiesbüttmoor, plants that are rather rare for this region grow. Carnivorous plants such as sundew also occur. They get the nitrogen that is missing in the bog by catching insects. Ice Age relicts plants such as Seven Star , rafter rushes and vaginal cotton grass , are also on Wiesbüttmoor rarities. This habitat is too wet for trees, too poor in nutrients for lush shrub vegetation.

The adder feels particularly comfortable in moors, heaths, and damp lowlands and is therefore not uncommon in Wiesbüttmor.

The Judenbörnchen

The so-called Judenbörnchen is located on the edge of the Wiesbüttmoor . It is a spring that feeds the moor with water . It owes its name to numerous Jewish cattle traders who drove their animals along the old Birkenhainer trading route , who stopped at the Börnchen to water them at the fountain . The year 1778 is carved on the fountain stone.
