The 723 km long Amgun ( Russian Амгунь ) is a left tributary of the Amur in the Far East of Russia ( Asia ).

River course

The Amgun arises at the east face of Burejagebirges at an altitude of 590  m from the source flows Ajakit and suluk (also Choluk ). It initially flows about 200 kilometers in a valley of partly mountainous character between the Burejagebirge and Badschalgebirge in northeastern directions. Later the valley widens, the river forms a multitude of arms and meanders in the taiga- covered, swampy area west of the Amur . Finally, the Amgun flows into the lower reaches of the Amur opposite the settlement of Tyr above Nikolaevsk with an inland delta of several hundred square kilometers . Along its entire length, the Amgun flows through the territory of the Khabarovsk Territory .

There are no cities on the Amgun, the largest towns are the villages of Berjosowy and Selo imeni Poliny Ossipenko ( district administrative center ).

The eastern section of the Baikal-Amur Magistrale (BAM) runs along the Amgun for about 200 kilometers between the stations Mogdy (near where the rivers Ajakit and Suluk originate) and Postyshevo (near Berjosowy ). The river is crossed four times; three of the bridges are almost 500 meters long.

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Amgun covers 55,500 km². About 193 km from the mouth, the mean water flow is 550 m³ / s. From June to September the river is in high water with frequent flooding.

Near the mouth, the main arm of the river is about 350 m wide and 8 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.5 m / s. The most important tributaries are from the left Merek ( Мерек ), Nilan ( Нилан ), Nimelen ( Нимелен ) and Somnja ( Сомня ), from the right Badschal ( Баджаль ) and Duki ( Дуки ). In the valley of the Amgun, especially the lower reaches, there are approx. 2500 lakes with a total area of 647 km².

The Amgun freezes from late October to early May. The lower 300 kilometers from the estuary are navigable, but are not used for regular inland navigation.
