Ammenegg ( 904  m above sea level ) is a district of the city of Dornbirn in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) about 3.7 km as the crow flies from the city center .

Origin of name

The name “ Ammenegg ” is derived from a family originally resident there called “Amman”, although it is not certain that a bailiff (= Amman) actually lived here. The Rotte is mentioned in a document as early as 1431 in a fiefdom tax register.

Topography, geography, location and traffic

The district, about 3.7 km away from the center of Dornbirn, can be reached by motor vehicle via Bödelestraße (L 48) and is located about 700 m above Rickatschwende . The plot is about 800  m above sea level. A. and 1000  m above sea level A.

In “ Schematismus für Tirol und Vorarlberg ” this group is listed as an independent hamlet and part of Dornbirn. Also in the " Provinzial-Handbuch von Tirol und Vorarlberg for the year 1847 ".

The old road from Haselstauden via Ammenegg and the Losenpass ( Bödele ) to Schwarzenberg is one of the few original roads still preserved in Vorarlberg, as they existed for centuries. It was once one of the most important transport links in the Bregenzerwald .

A former school route of the Ammenegger children to Hauat is now a hiking route, but it is slowly becoming overgrown .

Below Ammenegg in the direction of Rickatschwende flows the Haselstauderbach (colloquially and from time immemorial: Stiglbach ).

Craft, trade

Due to the traffic situation and the late completion of a heavy-duty main road, Ammenegg did not create any special craft or commercial operations. Agriculture still dominates the area today and there were seven to eight farms between the Middle Ages and modern times, which were deserted around 1790 .

The Alpe Ammenegg ( Maisäß ) is located a little north above in Ammenegg, on the edge of Bödelestrasse. Two more farms, of the original seven, still exist.

Monuments

In Ammenegg there are two natural monuments, a tree-shaped juniper (Juniperus communis) and a sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus). The age of the tree-shaped juniper with a trunk diameter of about 30 cm is estimated to be 200 to 300 years.

The Ammenegg chapel, built in 1866, is also a listed building.

Sports

In the Ammenegg parcel there is a public natural toboggan run with a length of around 800 m and a height difference of 70 m.

Ammenegg (Langwies) is a popular starting point for hikes / ski tours to the Bödele in summer and winter .

The Langwies was to be equipped with a ski lift in the 1970s. However, the finished plans of the Dornbirner Seilbahn Gesellschaft mbH ( Karrenseilbahn / Bödelelifte) were ultimately not implemented due to a few winters with little snow and the western orientation of the slope.

Specialty

Ammenegg is one of the few areas in Dornbirn that is not yet connected to the municipal sewer network. The drinking water is supplied via its own brook catchment.
