Amphoe Wan Yai ( Thai อำเภอ หว้า น ใหญ่ ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) in the northeast of the Mukdahan Province . The Mukdahan Province is located in the western part of the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

geography

Neighboring counties are (clockwise from the south): Mueang Mukdahan in Mukdahan Province and That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom Province . In the east on the other bank of the Mekong lies the Savannakhet province of Laos .

The main river of the district is the border river Mekong .

history

Wan Yai was initially set up as a “branch circle” ( King Amphoe ) on September 16, 1977 by separating the Tambon Wan Yai, Pong Kham and Bang Sai Noi from the Mueang Mukdahan district . When the new Mukdahan Province was created in 1982, Wan Yai was one of the six counties that originally made up the new province. On May 9, 1992, Wan Yai was promoted to Amphoe.

In the village of Song Khon (Tambon Pong Kham) in December 1940, during the Franco-Thai War, Thai police shot and killed seven Thai Catholics suspected of spying for France. However, it may also have played a role that the radical nationalist military government of Plaek Phibunsongkhram generally rejected everything “foreign” and viewed Christianity as a “foreign religion”. Among those killed were a catechist , two religious sisters of the Love of the Holy Cross and four lay women (including three girls aged 14 to 16). They were considered martyrs of the faith in 1989 by Pope John Paul II. Beatified . The pilgrimage church of Our Lady in Song Khon, built in 1995 and dedicated to the seven martyrs, is one of the largest Christian churches in Thailand.

Local administration

There are two municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Wan Yai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หว้า น ใหญ่ ) consisting of the entire tambon Wang Yai.
  • Chanot (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ชะ โน ด ) consisting of the entire tambon Chanot.

There are also two " Tambon Administrative Organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO):

  • Pong Kham Dong Mu (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ป่ง ขาม ดง หมู )
  • Bang Sai Noi (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล บาง ทราย น้อย )
