The office was created on January 1, 2005 through the merger of the formerly free city of Malchin with the former office at Am Kummerower See . On June 7, 2009 Remplin was incorporated into the city of Malchin on January 1, 2019 Duckow .

The office does not have an officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag. The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg. It shows a looking bull's head with torn off neck fur and crown and the inscription "* AMT MALCHIN * AM KUMMEROWER SEE".
