Andrea Malfatti
Andrea Malfatti (born May 7, 1832 in Mori , Trentino , † February 7, 1917 in Trento ) was a Trentino sculptor.
Life
Andrea Malfatti was born in Mori in 1832 as the son of the sacristan Francesco Malfatti and Caterina Boschetti. He spent his youth together with his older brother Francesco in Trento, where he began to work as a carpenter and attended the city drawing school in the evenings. With the support of the noblewoman Margherita Salvetti Cloz, he moved to Milan in 1851 and worked as a wood carver in Leonardo Gaggia's workshop. From 1852 he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan with Benedetto Cacciatori and Francesco Hayez and came into contact with artists such as Vincenzo Vela , Pietro Magni , Antonio Tantardini and Francesco Barzaghi . After completing his studies, he returned to Trento and opened a sculptor's workshop there.
In 1862 he was involved in an irredentist attack, was arrested in Mori and imprisoned in Innsbruck . Suspicion of supporting Giuseppe Mazzini's conspiracy against Austria brought him back into custody.
In 1863 he married Lucia Biasori. In 1873 he moved to Milan, where he exhibited intensively and hoped for greater visibility. The connection to Trento and its clients there never broke off.
Malfatti was represented with his works at art exhibitions in Milan, Naples, Turin, Trieste and Rome, as well as at the world exhibition 1873 in Vienna, the world exhibition 1878 in Paris, the world exhibition 1889 in Paris, where he received a silver medal for his descent from the cross in marble and bronze received, and at the Tyrolean State Exhibition in Innsbruck in 1893.
In 1883 he won the competition for the Garibaldi monument in Cremona , which was erected in 1886. In 1891 he took part in the competition for the Dante monument in Trento. His design was not realized, but received a recognition award.
In 1892 he returned to Trento from Milan and founded his own studio with his friend Cesare Scotoni. In 1908 he returned his license to work as a sculptor to the city of Trento, from which he received a pension in 1912 in return for making his models available. His models are now exhibited in the Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto .
Andrea Malfatti is considered to be the main representative of naturalistic Italian grave and memorial sculpture. He created statues, monuments and tombs, mainly in marble, terracotta or bronze for numerous places in Tyrol and northern Italy.
