Andreas Gardt

Andreas Gardt (born December 26, 1954 in Mainz ) is a German philologist and linguist .

Life

After studying German and English at the Universities of Mainz and Heidelberg (state examination), stays in Cambridge and studying "Comparative Literature" at the University of East Anglia (Master of Arts), Gardt received his doctorate in English literature in Heidelberg in 1987 with a Work on the German translations by James Joyce . From 1983 to 1985 he worked at the University of Reading as a lecturer for German language and literature ( German Academic Exchange Service ) and then returned to Heidelberg, where he completed his habilitation in German linguistics in 1993 on linguistic reflection in the Baroque and Early Enlightenment . His habilitation was followed by professorships at the Universities of Heidelberg, Freiburg i.Br. and Osnabrück . In 2001 Gardt was appointed professor (C4) for German linguistics / linguistic history at the University of Kassel . He was visiting professor at the University of Szeged and the University of Queensland .

Gardt is a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and has been its President since April 2016. He is also a full member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .

research

Gardt has made important contributions to the history of language theory as well as to text and discourse analysis. Another focus is on researching the relationship between language and (political, cultural) identity . He was chairman of the “German Dictionary” (Grimm's Dictionary, DWB) management committee and a member of the “ Goethe Dictionary ” interacademic management committee . At the Göttingen Academy he is project leader of the research project "Word history digital" as part of the "Center for digital lexicography of the German language". Gardt is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of “Historiographia Linguistica” and “Angermion. Yearbook for British-German Cultural Relations ". He is also co-editor of the “Studia Linguistica Germanica” (De Gruyter) and the “Hand Bücher Sprachwissen (HSW)” (De Gruyter).
