Andreas Müller-Pohle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Müller-Pohle (born July 19, 1951 in Braunschweig ) is a German photographer , media artist and publisher . Since the mid-1970s, his photographic work has been characterized by an intensive theoretical examination of questions of mediality and perceptibility. He is considered an important representative of experimental photography and the founder of visualism .

As a publisher, Müller-Pohle has accompanied and significantly shaped the development of artistic photography since the early 1980s through his magazine European Photography . In addition, he is committed to the distribution of Vilém Flusser's writings, whose work he made known primarily in the German-speaking world.

biography

Andreas Müller-Pohle studied economics and communication science from 1973 to 1974 in Hanover and from 1974 to 1979 in Göttingen . He initially worked with the medium of film and from the mid-1970s onwards he devoted himself to the practical and theoretical examination of photography. In 1979 Müller-Pohle founded the magazine “ European Photography ” and has been its editor ever since. At his suggestion, his friend, philosopher Vilém Flusser , wrote the essay “For a Philosophy of Photography” in 1981, which was followed by other media and cultural philosophical texts in the following years. Since then, Müller-Pohle has dealt intensively with Flusser's oeuvre . In 1986, together with Volker Rapsch, he published Flusser's essay “Die Schrift” as the first electronic book on diskette - as an early forerunner of the e- book . In 1996 he founded the “Edition Flusser”, which was made up of ten volumes.

In 2001 Müller-Pohle was awarded the “European Photography Prize” of the Reind M. De Vries Foundation, a one-time award for special services to European photography. Since the early 1980s he has been teaching as a visiting professor and lecturer at teaching institutes in Europe, Asia and North and South America, and in 2005 he founded Eye-Mind, an individual workshop initiative in Berlin.

Müller-Pohle has a daughter, he lives and works in Berlin .

Andreas Müller-Pohle's work is characterized by a wide variety of topics and concepts and the reflexive examination of the medium of photography: While his first projects from the mid-1970s dealt with questions of image aesthetics and photographic perception, he then turned to - now also with the medium of video - photo recycling and the materiality and immateriality of photography. Müller-Pohle's interest in “interfaces” in their double function as alienation and translation leads him in several of his works to completely renounce the classic photographic image and to transform it into other code systems (such as alphanumeric or genetic codes).

His work The Danube River Project , created in 2005/06, takes up this longstanding preoccupation with interfaces: A “picture atlas” of the Danube is supplemented and commented on by its “blood picture”, which the artist determined from water samples and inscribed in the photographs. Müller-Pohle's subsequent project, "Hong Kong Waters", is also concerned with the subject of water. It is dedicated to the diverse water landscapes of the Asian metropolis in a photo, video and sound installation. Another work on the topic of water, Kaunas upon the Rivers , was created in 2017 as part of an artist in residence. Since 2013 Müller-Pohle has been working on an extensive cycle on aspects of urban traffic ( Studies on Traffic ), for which he uses the media of photography, sound and video [Vimeo-Link].

Müller-Pohle's work has received international attention since the mid-1980s. His work has been widely published and exhibited in more than 200 exhibitions at home and abroad and is represented in numerous public and private collections.

Quotes

  • “I take photos of what I don't see. What I don't photograph, I see. "(Müller-Pohle)
  • “The examination of visibility, perceptibility and photographic mediality forms, so to speak, the Ariadne thread in the photographic oeuvre of Andreas Müller-Pohle. He always reflected on his work theoretically (especially in the concept of 'visualism', which he published in 1980) without his artistic work being reduced to it or even becoming mere examples of his theoretical discourse. "(Carl Aigner)
  • “Müller-Pohle (has) consistently created an experimental oeuvre that has moved from depicting things to conveying their unrepresentability. The works can be called interfaces , the faces are out of sight, and Andreas Müller-Pohle lets the images communicate on the move towards eternal contemporaneity. "( Hubertus von Amelunxen )
  • “He is a purist and one of the pioneers in the field of media art. You are doing Andreas Müller-Pohle right when you realize that there is no other representative of digital art in Germany who has dealt with the medium of photography so early, so intensively and successfully - theoretically and using digital image processes. "(Christoph Tannert)
