Andreas Melan

Andreas Melan (born April 12, 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat . He was the Austrian Ambassador to Peru from 2009 to January 2014 and Ambassador to Ethiopia from January 2014 to August 2018 .
Life
The doctor of law studied law at the University of Vienna , European administration at the College of Europe in Bruges and international public law at the International Court of Justice in The Hague . He did an internship at the European Commission in Brussels .
Diplomatic career
Andreas Melan had his first diplomatic accreditation in 1988 as an attaché in the Austrian embassy in Islamabad . From 1989 to 1992 he was cultural attaché at the embassy in Madrid , from 1992 to 1994 he was deputy head of mission at the embassy in Athens . In the Austrian Foreign Ministry (then Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, since 2007 Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, since 2014 Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs) from 1994 to 1999 he was Head of Unit for EU Policy Issues. His next assignment abroad took him from 1999 to 2004 as deputy head of mission to the embassy in Buenos Aires . From 2004 to 2009 he was Head of Division for Latin America and the Caribbean and Deputy America Director in the State Department.
From December 2009 he was the Austrian ambassador in Lima , co-accredited for Bolivia . Since the Austrian embassy in Bogotá was closed in April 2012, he was also co-accredited for Colombia and Ecuador . In January 2014, Melans moved to the Austrian embassy in Ethiopia , which he has headed as ambassador since then. He is the successor to Gudrun Graf and is co-accredited for Uganda , Djibouti , the Republic of the Congo and South Sudan as well as permanent representative to the African Union . His successor in Peru is Andreas Rendl . In August 2018, Andreas Melan was replaced in Ethiopia by Roland Hauser , who had previously been the Austrian ambassador to Bulgaria .
