Andrei Wiktorowitsch Gaponow-Grechow ( Russian Андрей Викторович Гапонов-Грехов ; born June 7, 1926 in Moscow ) is a Russian physicist and university professor .

Life

Gaponow-Grechow's parents Marija Tichonowna Grechowa and Viktor Ivanovich Gaponow were physicists and had met during their studies at Moscow University (MGU) . In the early 1930s they moved to Gorky , where they carried out radiation physics studies. Thanks to Grechowa's efforts, the Radiation Physics Faculty was set up at the University of Gorky during the German-Soviet War and the Physico-Technical Research Institute (GIFTI) was founded.

After attending school, Gaponow-Grechow worked as a locksmith mechanic at GIFTI (1942–1943) and then began studying at the Gorkier Industrial Institute. After the first two annual courses, he switched to the radiation physics faculty at Gorky University, where he graduated in 1949. He then began the three-year traineeship at AA Andronow . At Andronov's suggestion, he began to develop a general theory of electromechanical systems for the candidate's dissertation . In 1955, after six years, he defended his dissertation at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute . Because of the importance of this work, Gaponow-Grechow was promoted to both a candidate and a doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences .

Gaponow-Grechow taught at the Gorkier Industrial Institute after completing his apprenticeship, which then became the Gorkier Polytechnic Institute. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked at GIFTI, and at the same time he continued to teach as a professor at the Gorkier Polytechnic Institute. He investigated nonlinear oscillation processes and problems of generating and amplifying powerful high-frequency electromagnetic waves in the millimeter and submillimeter wave range . Together with his colleagues, he discovered and examined electromagnetic shock waves . He developed gyrotrons that were used in nuclear fusion reactors and for guiding objects in space .

In 1964 Gaponow-Grechow became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) and in 1968 a full member. In 1966 he became deputy director of the Radiation Physics Research Institute (NIRFI) founded by his mother in 1956. From 1976 he headed the Institute for Applied Physics (IPF) of the AN-SSSR until 2003. Since then he has been the scientific director of this institute.

1989–1991 Gaponow-Grechow was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR . On his 75th birthday, a book was published with materials on his work in science and society.

Gaponow-Grechow's younger brother is the physicist Sergei Viktorovich Gaponow .
