Andrew Harry McKim (born July 6, 1970 in Saint John , New Brunswick ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League from 1986 to 2001, among others .

Career

McKim began his career in 1986 in the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League Verdun Junior Canadiens . There he was one of the players with the best points within the team. In his first season with the Junior Canadiens, the offensive player scored 87 points in 70 league games . In the following years he was able to further increase his point yield. In the summer of 1989 he moved within the league to the Olympiques de Hull , where he was also able to convince and was able to score 130 times in 70 games. Despite the good performance, McKim was never considered in an NHL Entry Draft .

For the 1990/91 season he signed a contract with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the then International Hockey League . A season later he was in the squad of St. John's Maple Leafs from the American Hockey League , the then farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs . In St. John's he played a total of 95 games and scored 116 points. McKim reached the final of the AHL with the Maple Leafs this season, which however was lost to the Adirondack Red Wings . After only one season, he left the club again and joined the then league rivals Providence Bruins . He was active there for two years. During this time McKim was first used in the National Hockey League . Those responsible for the Boston Bruins appointed him to their team several times during the 1992/93 and 1994/95 seasons , so that he ultimately wore the Boston jersey 36 times .

After another career station with the Adirondack Red Wings from the AHL in the 1994/95 season, he forced a move to Europe in the summer of 1995. There he was signed by the then Swiss second division club HC Servette Genève , where he performed well and thus attracted the interest of top European clubs. He finally left Switzerland in 1996 to sign a contract with Eisbären Berlin from the German Ice Hockey League . With the polar bears, the right-handed shooter was able to reach third place in the European Hockey League in 1999 . In total, he was on the ice 154 times for the Berliners and scored 139 points.

At the end of the 1998/99 season he did not receive a new contract from those responsible for the Eisbären Berlin. Finally he left the DEL in 1999 and returned to Switzerland. There he was initially active for the EHC Kloten in the 1999/00 season .

After 18 games and 9 points in the 2000/01 season with the ZSC Lions , his career ended on October 31, 2000, when his opponent Kevin Miller pushed him head first into the gang with a check from behind. He suffered a severe concussion that forced him to retire from his career. According to the verdict, former HCD striker Kevin Miller is guilty of ordinary and negligent bodily harm. Miller was sentenced to three months in prison, has to pay 10,000 francs satisfaction to Andrew McKim, pay the court fee of 2,500 francs and is 100 percent liable for damages for the consequences of the act.

After his return to the USA, Miller refuses to recognize the Swiss court decision. A Grand Rapids court sentenced Miller to pay Andrew McKim $ 1.6 million on June 7, 2014 after the victim's insurance company sued.

International

McKim completed 16 full internationals for the Canadian national team , with which he took part in the 1991 and 1995 World Cups . He scored twelve goals, 13 assists and received 25 penalty minutes.
