Andrzej Halemba (born November 19, 1954 in Chełm Śląski ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman , missionary , translator , former director of the Missionary Training Center in Warsaw and secretary of the mission commission of the Polish Bishops' Conference and its delegate for missionary affairs. He has been working for the Pontifical Church in Need Foundation since 2006 and is the founder of the Mission Museum in Brzęczkowice .

biography

Childhood and studies

Halemba is one of the three sons of Eryk Halemba and Maria, b. Ryszka. He attended elementary school in his birthplace and, from 1969, the Tadeusz Kościuszko secondary school in Mysłowice . After graduating from high school, he studied at the Pontifical Theological Institute in Cracow from 1973 and obtained a master’s degree in theology in 1981 . He was ordained a priest on April 3, 1980 .

Between 1993 and 1994 Halemba completed further missions studies at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw , which he obtained with a licentiate on Certain Aspects of the Inculturation of the Mambwe People in the Light of the Apostolic Letter Africae terrarum of Pope Paul VI. completed. Live and act

After his ordination in 1980 he was parish vicar in the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Świętochłowice and dedicated himself to the “Marienkinder”, a group that supported missionaries. The decision to go on a mission himself was influenced by an encounter with Senegalese Cardinal Hyacinthe Thiandoum during the visit of Pope John Paul II in Poland (1979). After thorough preparation Halemba was 1983-1993 and 2004-2005 as a Fidei Donum - missionary in Zambia in Mambwe mission of the Diocese Mbala (now Kasama ), where he is especially for the expansion of medical care for the population, the establishment a hospital in Mambwe as well as the establishment of the first kindergarten and the first secondary school in the mission.

Following his further missions studies in Warsaw, in 1996 he was appointed Director of the Center for Missionary Education and Secretary of the Mission Commission within the Polish Bishops' Conference . In addition, in 1999 he was appointed a delegate for missionary affairs. In this number he initiated numerous projects and competitions, among others with the title My Friend from Africa and a Missionary Olympiad . His work for the Polish Bishops' Conference and the Center for Missionary Formation ended in 2003.

Halemba has been working for the international organization ACN International ( Church in Need in Königstein im Taunus ) since 2006 . Until 2010 he was responsible as a consultant for aid projects for the English and Portuguese speaking countries of Africa. Since 2010 he has been the head of the Asia / Africa department and responsible for aid projects in the Middle East , Eritrea and the Arabian Peninsula . In this context he supports the local churches in Iraq and Syria and is involved in projects for the development and implementation of programs and their financing for the reconstruction of war and crisis areas in the region.

Translations and publications in Mambwe

During his missionary work in Zambia, Halemba worked on a new translation of the New Testament in the Mambwe language . The translation was printed in 1991. In 1994 he published a Mambwe-English dictionary with 17,500 entries. In 2005 the fairy tales of the Mambwe people were published in Mambwe and in English, and in 2007 the English-Mambwe dictionary with 21,300 entries and grammar. In addition, Halemba brought together part of the work of Father Marcel Petitclair and published it as a Roman missal in the Mambwe language. He also revised and published the liturgical aids for catechists prepared by Father Petitclair in three volumes for the liturgical worship of the reading years ABC. In 2009 Halemba was involved in the publication of a children's Bible in the Mambwe language.

Cardinal August Hlond Mission Museum

Halemba brought back many memorabilia from his pastoral and missionary trips, such as objects of daily life, art (mainly African , but also Indian and from Papua ) and cult objects. For these collections he founded the Cardinal August Hlond Mission Museum in Brzęczkowice (Poland), which opened in 2004 .
