biography

The son of the historian and director of the Gdansk library, Marian Pelczar, began studying mathematics at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow after completing school in 1959 and graduated in 1964 with a doctorate . He then worked as a research assistant at the Jagiellonian University and completed his habilitation there in 1972 . In the same year he was awarded the Stefan Banach Prize of the Polish Mathematical Society.

In 1980 he was appointed professor at the Department of Mathematics at the Jagiellonian University, where he focused on analysis , partial and ordinary differential equations . In addition to his work as a university lecturer , he was first director of the Institute for Mathematics between 1981 and 1984 and then from 1984 to 1987 Vice-Rector for Studies at the Jagiellonian University. Afterwards he held the post of director of the Institute for Mathematics again until 1990.

Between 1990 and 1993 Pelczar was rector of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

He was also a member of the Polish Mathematical Society (Polskie Towarzystwo matematyczne) and its President from 1987 to 1991. He also served from 1997 to 2000 and Vice President of the European Mathematical Society ( European Mathematical Society ) and a member of the Polish Academy of Learning .

For his services he was appointed Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2002.
