The documentary was broadcast on Arte on December 6th, 2016 and on December 1st and on December 15th. repeated in the MDR . 1.9 million viewers and a rate of 12.5% were determined for the repetition.
The press reception of the documentation was friendly. The Tagesspiegel certified her a "pleasantly differentiated [s], because it was not narrowed down to a thesis from the start with [...] unexpected moments".
According to the NZZ , the documentation is “informative” and finds that it is “able to captivate [...] for over ninety minutes, especially in [their] perspective beyond the current day-to-day business”.
In the Süddeutsche Zeitung the “tremendous hard work” is praised. The film tells little that is new, but “skilfully summarizes” familiar things. The lack of “explicit critics” is criticized. Even the Social Democrats Franz Müntefering and Peer Steinbrück, even the Left Sahra Wagenknecht, embed their skepticism in a basic noise of respect ”.
According to Spiegel , the film fails: “The film fails. […] Explaining to Angela Merkel […] showing her anew, that cannot work. Still, watching the film fail is exciting, it is instructive and in the end even a pleasure. ”The film shows Merkel more as“ misunderstood ”than“ unexpected ”and makes it clear how great the distance is between her and her fellow politicians and that it corresponds to an “inner independence” that enables Merkel to “deal with power in a special way”.
On Deutschlandfunk , Michael Meyer regrets that the film, which has been made since 2015, was no longer able to take up many newer developments, but that it still has "definitely exciting moments".
