Antonios Varthalitis

Antonios Varthalitis AA , Greek Αντώνιος Βαρθαλίτης , Antónios Varthalítis ; (* January 1, 1924 in Vari / Syros , Greece ; † October 27, 2007 in Athens ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia from 1962 to 2003 .

Life

Antonios Varthalitis joined the order of the Assumptionists (Augustinians of the Assumption) in Athens. He studied theology and philosophy in Lyon . He was ordained a priest on January 11, 1953 . He then worked as a pastor in the parish of St. Peter and St. Paul in Piraeus and was involved in ecumenism with the Greek Orthodox Church .

In 1962 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Corfu , which includes the Greek islands of Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The episcopal ordination received his Venedictos Printesis , Archbishop of Athens; Co-consecrators were Ioánnis Perrís, Archbishop of Naxos, Andros, Tinos and Mykonos , and Georges Xenopulos SJ , Bishop of Syros (and Milos) . In 1992 he was appointed the first Vicar Apostolic of Thessaloniki by Pope John Paul II .

He was involved in the Commission of the Bishops 'Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) and the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE).

In 1999 he was nicknamed "Inselbischof". All his life Antonios Varthalitis ran a 4,000 m² fruit and vegetable cultivation near Athens; He distributed the cucumbers , tomatoes and aubergines to older residents in his diocese.

In 2003 his resignation was granted by John Paul II.
