Anthony John Fowler (born March 10, 1991 in Liverpool ) is an English professional boxer. He is a cousin of former soccer player Robbie Fowler .

Amateur career

Anthony Fowler started boxing at the age of ten, winning the British Cadet Championships in 2007, the English Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009, and the English Elite Welterweight Championships in 2010. He was also able to win the British elite welterweight championships in 2011 and 2012. In 2014 he won the English Elite Middleweight Championships.

His first international successes were winning a bronze medal in the light welterweight division at the 1st EU Cadet Championships in 2007 in Italy, as well as the bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2013 World Championships in Kazakhstan. At the World Cup, he was able to prevail against Victor Corobcevschii from Moldova (3-0), Abdelmalek Rahou from Algeria (3-0), Dmytro Mytrofanow from Ukraine (3-0) and Stefan Härtel from Germany (2-1) and achieved thus the semi-final against Schänibek Älimchanuly from Kazakhstan. Due to a hand injury, however, Fowler could not start the fight, so his opponent went through walkover automatically to the final.

From July to August 2014 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and won the gold medal in the middleweight division. He defeated Kyriakos Spanos from Cyprus, Kieran Smith from Scotland, Nick Abaka from Kenya, Benny Muziyo from Zambia and in the final Vijender Kumar from India.

At the European Olympic qualification tournament in Samsun , he was able to buy a ticket to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games . He had defeated Konstantin Khvistani from Georgia (3-0) in the preliminary round, Valeriu Sîrbu from Moldova (3-0) in the round of 16 and Bogdan Juratoni from Romania (2-1 ) in the quarter-finals , lost in the semi-finals to Christian Assomo from France (0 : 3), but beat the German Xhek Paskali (3: 0) in the fight for third place. At the Olympic Games he was eliminated in the first fight against Schänibek Älimchanuly.

  • November 2014: 1st place in the middleweight division at the Golden Belt tournament in Romania

Professional career

In 2017 Fowler switched to the professional camp under the promoter Matchroom Sport and won his debut on May 27 in the first round against the Latvian Arturs Geikins. He suffered his first defeat on March 30, 2019 in the fight for the WBA International title just on points against the also undefeated Scott Fitzgerald.

On August 2, 2019, he defeated Brian Rose (31-5) unanimously on points and thus became WBO Intercontinental Champion . He won the WBA International title unanimously against Harry Scarff (8-0) on November 23, 2019.
